Years of knowing the supernatural is all around put Xander in the perfect frame of mind to really hear George and get right to the heart of the matter. His inquiry about getting to the end of the reaping gig gave her the opportunity to sort what she thinks happens, or really what she hopes happens. It was interesting to listen to her doubts and feelings. As the boss, I bet she doesn't get to share those with anyone any longer.

It was excellent to finally get the back story of all the regret simmering between Dawn and Xander. Here's hoping George gives them the opportunity to put it to rest and move on.

The "George has doubts about what she was told" was actually inspired by the DLM movie (which really did kind of suck ass). The writers (who I swear didn't watch the original series) had George interacting with Reggie and had her tell Reggie that she needed to move on, and if possible, convince their mother to move out of town. As George watches them leave, they have her voice overing that she was obviously still hanging on to something because she was still a reaper and hadn't moved on.

The other bit was inspired from the "Nighthawks" episode in the original series run, where all the reapers (except George and Rube) have to fill out self-evaluations and the last question they all have to answer is "Why are you here?"

I figured there was enough room in canon to allow George to doubt Rube's theory about how long people are stuck with being a reaper. Since it made sense that Xander would ask, I thought it would be good to play out George's doubts about what actually lets reapers move on.

Glad you liked my bit of fanwanking here.
