thanks so much! this was a very weird story to write, but in the end I find I'm rather pleased with it.

"It isn't the configurations that matter," she says, vaulting quick and easy over the back of the seat. She drops her head back, rolls it to the side, looks over at him with those dark, crazy eyes; her hands are busy already, twisting things back into position, firing her up. "It's the pattern, Malcolm," she says, "the pattern that continues. Forward motion." She grins, sideways and a little loopy. "Progress."

Oh, this is totally lovely! I really like this glimpse into what their world is like after the movie has ended. And your River is delightful.

I've seen folks talk about taking a fic and remixing it so that the foreground is in the background and vice versa - your story really catches that nicely.

Girl's still crazy as a box of weasles, and no mistake; she's fast and mean and unpredictable and smarter by half than will let him ever be entirely at ease.

I really like this line. For me, it hints that he part of Mal that doesn't like anything to be easy and for everything to be a challenge, so the fact that this is River is right in his comfort zone. But that might just be me. *g*

Thank you so much! I feel like every year, my remix winds up being done in a slightly different way. Usually, it winds up being harder each year, somehow, but I always like the stories I end up with, so.

And I think you're right on, about Mal and River-the thing for me is that, post-Serenity, River's no longer dealing with Miranda in the same way, but that doesn't mean that she's not still crazy. She's been hurt and changed, and she's not quite right in the head, nor ever will be-but there are ways of coping, you know? There are workarounds. And for Mal, I think, it's a lot easier that she be slightly insane than that she be all better-he wouldn't know what to make of that, or how to trust it.

long-winded response, sorry! What I meant to say is thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Your character voices are spot-on. Nicely done.
