I really enjoyed reading this - Sam's lies to Jess, and his hidden truths in his atlas, Dean's phone numbers and Sammy growing up and away from his family.
Oh, Sammy. This is really lovely. I have a thing about map imagery (yeah, it's a thing, don't mock me), and I simply love how it frames Sam's life here. And the ending is so wonderful, just the two boys and their open road.
i have a map thing, and i really love how you use the atlas to mark sam's changing attitudes towards his family and his life. at twelve it means he's part of team winchester with dad and dean - it means he has some responsibility and gets treated like an adult and not a kid - and by the time he goes to stanford it's a symbol of a life he never wants to see again. (except it's also kind of his map back to dean, and his one tangible link to the brother who loves him.) and i really love that by the end, he's figured out that he doesn't need the atlas to find his way, because he has dean and dean has the impala, and he doesn't need a map to get himself home, because that is home.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it worked for you, especially the changing meaning of the map - that's *exactly* what I was going for, and how he couldn't disavow it even when he kind of wanted to, because it *was* his map back to Dean, and his proof of how much Dean loved him. But when it's gone, he realizes he doesn't need it anymore.
There are some lovely insights in here, into Sam and Dean both. The comment on Dean's odd romanticism rang very true; he is a (not so) secret romantic in so many areas of his life, even aside from sex and love: his car, his music, his family, movies--he is passionate about their excellence and meaning. The correlation between Sam's life and the map is nicely made, and it's good to know there are that many churches in America. Congrats to both you and amchara for an intriguing concept, well executed.

He really is. He's making himself over into the legend he'd like to embody, and becoming larger than life himself in the process. Luckily, he has Sam to ground him. *sigh*
