Oh yes! How wonderful. I love how you've expanded that drabble here. And all of the different POVs - you wrote a convincing house elf, fantastic! - and the political machinations of it all. A fascinating and utterly believable look at this time period, I really did enjoy it immensely. =D

Thanks for reading and commenting, sweetie! I'm so glad you enjoyed Winky especially; she hasn't gotten nearly the attention she deserves. *smile* Ooooh, do I always do "political machinations?" Must branch out! Maggie

It's you! Oh, of course it's you - it did cross my mind, actually. Reminded me of some of your other Black family gathering stories.

This was exceptionally good.

Smiling to himself, Barty took off his traveling cloak silently and held it out in his right hand. Winky's bulging eyes moved frantically between Barty and the cloak.

Perfect, absolutely perfect. It's such a casual thing to do, and a moment later, the reader backtracks and understands.

Over the murmur of the guests Narcissa could hear the words "Cornwall" and "cocksucker" and "engaged."
"Oh, my," Narcissa said. "This is not good."
"What?" Barty asked suddenly, raising his head.

Awesome exchange! :D

It's wonderful how it all comes full circle in the end. The switching from one point of view to the next left me slightly disorientated, but a paragraph into the new section, I was always pulled back in, and these little disjoinders really made your story-telling all the better. It was also fascinating to see Bella for once not recruiting Sirius, but rather keeping him away from all that; her talking sense into Lucius, and not the other way around ( ... )

Hello, aillil! I'm so, so glad to see that you enjoyed the fic! *huge sigh of relief* I have to admit I struggled a bit with this, and I've been anxious, hoping that I did your original drabble justice. I think I took it in a slightly different direction from what you'd originally intended, but it was a great journey and a chance to write characters I don't usually pay enough attention to. (I'm not quite sure how that happened, since you have so much R/S to work with! But there was something very compelling about this scenario, and then remeciel's illustrations caught my imagination, as well.)

Thanks so much for letting me play with your work! Maggie

Oh my word, it's completely impossible to guess, isn't it?

Here with my RP journal. :)

No, I'd never have guessed, not least because of your choice of characters! :D The direction was very different, that's right, and I was quite astonished to see that you'd brought Crouch jr into it, but it all adds up so well, and it was a great read.

Thank you so much for remixing it so brilliantly. :)

The thing about this that impresses me the most (and there are many wonderful things about it) are the vivid, spot-on characterizations of the POV characters.

Winky is exactly what a house elf should sound like - with different priorities from humans, but not of inferior intelligence. I could absolutely, 100% see how she became the Winky we see in GOF and OotP.

Barty is just ... ooh, I want to slap him, especially how he treats Winky. Exactly the right kind of arrogant snot.

Lucius is also the right kind of arrogant for him - and then I like the look at how sane, pre-Azkaban Bella sees him.

Narcissa - I love the way that, right from the beginning, you've highlighted how her strength is more in interpersonal relations and connections than in vision or ideology.

Regulus is just a perfect sulky, slightly oblivious teenager - some of his thoughts on Voldemort had me giggling a bit! And Crouch Sr rounds it out nicely. Wonderful job!
