The thought of Dean being the one left behind, of Sam getting to go with Mary because he was special - that scene really hit me hard. Great job.

I made myself a little miserable with that bit, I have to admit. It just struck me that if John and Mary switched places, then Dean and Sam probably would too. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

I'm so glad you liked it! I was a little bit nervous about it, I always feel we owe our fellow fans slightly more than we owe the original creators... :-)

I was "Oh Dean"-ing quite a bit myself, I have to admit. I wondered if I'd gone too far, but rather than making him OOC, I think I was playing more with the unreliable narrator. He is looking back at childhood memories, after all, no matter how visceral they are. But it really struck me that all of Sam's resentment of Dean's relationship with their father just might bounce back on them if Mary was the one who survived.

I really enjoyed this Dean POV remix - the original was very urgent, Mary running faster and faster to keep up with all the things she found out, and her family falling behind. This one changed it around, with Dean the solid, hard-working, normal centre of the family, and the Mary-and-Sam whirlwind swirling around him. Great remix!

They turned out very differently, didn't they? But one of the things that strikes me about Supernatural is how differently Sam and Dean see so many of the the same events, and here I wanted to take that one step further. Sam always claims that John and Dean are a unit that excludes him, and I wondered if Dean would feel similarly about Mary and Sam.
