Hey, Bates! I miss him, and I enjoyed his POV here.

Thank you! He was a character who brought some great conflict with him and I think he was one of the few people on Atlantis who "truly comprehended how screwed they were" from the beginning. I like the idea of being able to look at him as regular guy with an extraordinary job.

You had a lot of wonderful banter there in the middle. I enjoyed reading this story a lot!

Nice use of Bates! I wasn't a big fan of him on the show, but it's good to see him again; he's a great addition to the remix.

Thank you! raisintorte has loved Bates for as long as I've known her, and she's really made me see the bits and pieces of "the man behind the Marine" that showed through when he wasn't busy being a dick. ;)

Oooh, Bates and Cadman in the same fic! Bonus points for Bates being enough of a geek to get the ST reference.

Also, loved his subtle digs on the Chair Force - that more than anything convinced me it was really him.

*grin* Thank you! I think, sometimes, that everybody at the SGC, or at least on the Atlantis expedition, is a little bit of a geek in some way, even if it's just watching the shows to laugh at how UTTERLY UTTERLY WRONG they are about the universe. ;) I pick on the Chair Force all the time, so that part was fun to write. (Go Navy!)

This was so wonderful! I've always had a soft spot for Bates and wish he was still at Atlantis. I think he was a good balance to the general wackiness (and laxness that even *I* could see). Liked the marine refs and I love how you've made him so sympathetic (You could just *feel* his justified irritation at Damn cocky zoomie either didn't know or didn't respect proper radio protocols. The latter was more offensive than the former, but either was bad enough. and at Sheppard's pointy beard comment.

Also, I liked that you pretty much gave him the proper send-off (not to mention some background) that the show never did. I'm just going to imagine this is what "really" happened.

Aw, thank you so much! raisintorte has loved Bates as long as I've known her and I really wanted to make him a character that was both true to the portrayal on the show and true to human nature. Also, the line you quoted was my very favorite. *beams* I'm so glad Bates fans think I did him justice - it's terribly nerve-wracking to write a character like him!
