And suppose I never met you, suppose we never fell in love
Suppose I never ever let you kiss me so sweet and so soft
Suppose I never ever saw you, suppose we never ever called
Suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my own fall
Just to break my fall …
‘Fidelity’ - Regina Spektor
“Hello” Buzz answered the phone
“Buzz?? ..” a female voice coughed correcting “General Grunt?”
“Yes, It’s me” The man answered lowly checking around the empty kitchen, while grinning satisfied “Hi, Bella…. ”
“Hi, would you like to come for lunch with us!?
“I’d love to go” He said playfully “Can *my* friend come too??”
“Of course” Bella giggled an answer
“We’ll be there in a minute”
Buck could heard his father at the phone from the second floor and wasn’t hard to guess with who, for the tone on his voice.
The General was smiling and sounded almost nice, but of course he was nice…. nicer than before at least and that was all thanks to that woman who lived on front.
Even Tank had to agree, it was a lot easier to live with their strict father since he was seeing someone. Tho it wasn’t always easy to accept the fact that he was seeing someone again, deep down they all liked his new girlfriend, in special they liked who their father was with her…
The boy wondered almost hopeful if he was the mentioned ‘friend’. The word and its meaning was gratifying for the young boy who didn’t have much friends himself, even more special if it came from a father who had always being distant and difficult to approach
“Come on, Buck! We are going to Bella’s now” the man called him over from the first floor
“ I’m coming, da.... …. Sir! …" Buck replied going down the stairs where his father waited cheerful
And they both crossed the usually empty road toward a white house at the other side, one that Buck specially enjoyed visiting, for the same reason he liked visiting his only real friend, Jill Smith, because both houses were green, flowery and fresh,
...like only a few had the unusual luck to be in a desert town like Strangetown……
** ** ** **
Buzz Grunt and Lyla Vandermorgan met as kids,
fell in love in high school,
married as soon as they reached adulthood,
and in no time they were raising two boys and their blond lit’ accident,
but their lives never had a happily ever after.
In matter of facts it hadn’t taken long for Buzz to realize the woman who was a perfect girlfriend for years, was far from being a supporting wife, not even a responsible mother.
She loved him, no doubt, and he trusted her, at least he trusted her word and her promise, the only one she ever did ‘I'll never cheat on you, Buzz, I’d leave you first”.
But she was demanding and needy of physical pleasures and personal gratifications,
and no matter how hard Buzz tried to satisfy her
in all aspect of their martial and personal relation…..
…. it was never enough
She would always end up looking for outside ways to compensate for his lacks
with material things that she never used or needed, but always Buzz covered for, quietly and without questions, just to keep her happy…
…no matter the cost.
It wasn’t much different with her children.
She loved them, yes, but her capacity to fully care for their boys simply didn’t seam to extend beyond basic needs and a couple of times a day playing with them.
She was hardy able to do any bigger effort and would ran quickly tired, once more turning to outside compensations for the stress of being a mother
with luxuries that Buzz would also stand for, quietly and without questions,
just to keep her pleased …..
And so it was how, too often Buzz coming back from work, would found his children neglected by some apart time babysitter, who his wife had most probably hired on a rush without even checking for references.
And too often he quietly restored order on his home once more,
like always, mentally excusing his wife’s behavior on the hard work of raising three boys and the solitude of being a military man’s wife.
But too often as well, Buzz witnessed when Lyla was in fact at home with her kids,
how she notoriously preferred Ripp over his brothers.
She insisted constantly that he needed her he most.
That Tank was not only older, but stronger
and too much of a Grunt for her to handle,
while Buck, their youngest, was independent
and normally keep himself entertain alone,
but Ripp required more attention and softer discipline.
And in a way, she was right, but her favoritism
only created a raising rivalry between the older brothers
along with a very low sense of self-esteem on their younger, who grew up mostly a room by himself
So by the time Buck had become a kid,
Lyla found herself with two boys constantly arguing or bothering each other
and younger one who was shy, insecure, weak and full of fears.
It was her breakdown.
Soon her household started deteriorating rapidly, as well as her relationship with Buzz
until finally one night,
she simply left
… and they never saw her again…
