daily post: Time

So the mutiny arc culminated around 3:30 in the afternoon. This seemed strange to me, but then I realized I rarely think about actual time in Battlestar, maybe because I relate time so much to where the sun is in the sky and obviously there was none ( Read more... )

I actually never use any reference to time in any fic ever. It's just easier for me that way.

I rarely mention it, too. Even if someone has a meeting at a certain time I'm more likely to have them say "I have a meeting in an hour" than "I've got a meeting at 13:00 hours."

That's a good way around it though. Plus if you do Nano, you end up cheating and having the characters flail around about 'I am late, I am so late...' blah blah... but I never actually say when they should have been somewhere.

I'm a massive cheat when it comes to fic though, everything is 'an hour' 'a few minutes' and so on.

I can see the post-finale fic time being significant. Morning, evening, etc. It seems less significant when they aren't on solid ground. Maybe time starts to be more of a blur then.

I mention time occasionally on Galactica. I wonder how often they actually slept through the night though.

I can imagine that their body clocks were really messed up after awhile.

Time is such a pain when writing fics, as is determining the proper timeline. Thanks RDM! :D

LOL - I make vague notions of it? I think? I think there were instances in writing when I mention when the lights are dimmed or switched on (airplanes sort of gave me that idea), and then about the artificiality of the construct of time... I tend to make it feel - wobbly? For the characters - in a way, I treat the lack of measurable time (without the sun and everything being mechanical) as a sort of psychological, nostalgic thing.

... So... I was thinking about my fics, and I think "time" as a concept is one of my favorite things to play around with. XD
