You were probably better off not saying anything, unless you felt composed enough to say something with a clear head. Going off on her, while justifiable given the remark she made, only would have drawn negative attention to you and dragged you down to her level. Because really, anyone who would make an ignorant comment like that doesn't deserve to be taken seriously, and I think most people know that. You don't have to explain yourself to any of us, because I don't think we've achieved the level of perfection in our own lives where we should be judging you and yours.
Thanks for the reassurance that I did the right thing. I mentioned to another friend that my feelings about it point to unresolved issues on my part. I grew up very poor and although I thought I had gotten rid of those feelings of inferiority, her comment hurt enough to prove that I haven't completely healed.
Even out of our hurtful moments, there is truth and the chance to improve ourselves.
Elenor Roosevelt said something like "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Don't even let her comment concern you for like a minute people like her are always looking to put someone else down because they have serious doubts about their own self worth. Just imagine what it's like to know that you could never be able to provide for yourself indepently, I always tell people that I may not have much or what I have may not be fancy but it's mine and I know that I worked hard to get it and knowing I can take care of myself makes me richer than a millionair.
Well said. I had forgotten that quote from Elenor. Thanks for reminding me of that and more. You are right, it is better to be self-reliant and poor than dependant and rich.
I got mad at a friend of mine recently. He was looking through my wedding album and came to a picture of two of my aunts, a cousin and the cousin's daughter. My cousin is a wonderful, wonderful person. She's very smart and well mannered. She has tattoos. A lot of tattoos. My friend made a snide remark about how inappropriate it was to show her tattoos at my wedding. (We got married in the middle of August. She was wearing a white cotton tank top and a skirt and her daughter was wearing the cutest pink frilly dress I've ever seen.) I replied with, "Didn't anyone ever tell you not to judge a book by it's cover? She's still the same person I ran around the backyard with when I was eight; she's just more colorful now." A little side info: She started getting tattoos becasue she was in a very bad car wreck and had to have a couple surgeries. She wanted to cover the scars.
I think tattoos over scars are a great idea. None of my own tats cover scars but I remember once seeing a picture of a woman that had had breast cancer and lost both her breasts. Instead of getting implants, she got a beautiful tattoo over all the scar tissue. It incorporated symbols for life, strength, courage, love, and healing. It was powerful.
See, I don't know how to do that. I really need to learn.
Actually, I've been known to do that within my marriage and personal relationships, but I lack when it comes to strangers. She also pushed a nerve. I was very poor growing up and I guess that feeling of inferiority has not left me completely.
If she was close enough I could hear here, I would have leaned over and said, "by blood... actually. And you seem watered down. What are you again?"
It's the south. Come on. As long as you toss in a "bless your little heart" or one of the looks, "You poor stupid thing" or "What a sweetie in her stupidity" you can hang someone with your words.
"by blood" is great. I wish that would have come to mind.
The only thing that did come to mind was some curse words...and the image of me knocking out a few of her teeth. I need to learn the art of "hanging someone" with words. It wouldn't be bothering me still if I had been more reactive.
