Video Editing Software

Mar 15, 2011 09:54

Do any of you have advice/recommendations on video editing software?  I'm running Windows 7 and I'm not sure how much RAM I have.  I think it's 2 GB (sorry Jay! I can't remember).  I figured if I'm going to be crafty and not get kicked out of the incrayonyouberk community that I might have to finally enter the video world.
So please advise away!

I wish I could help! All I can say is that MovieMaker makes me want to punch babies, so you should probably avoid that. Then again, you're probably also on a Mac so it won't come up. Em or Matt would be able to tell you, though. Are you friends with Matt outside of the comm? If not I can poke him over here.

Oh right, operating systems. I might want to specify. I am so not on a Mac. That's more flash, bang, and sass than I need or want.

Thanks for the warning about MovieMaker! I am friends with Matt. I'll go bug them :P

I mean, MovieMaker is what what I use, because it's what I have, but there are programs that are easier to use which will do more. Em mentioned something to me about a youtuber who was doing tutorials on a Windows program. Let me see if I can poke her about who that was and what program they were using.

free: avidemux (non-linear, simple cuts/combines), virtualdub (linear-only, more useful for simple re-encoding and editing tasks like changing aspect ratio, cropping, cutting a single piece out of longer footage, etc.)
non-free: sony (Vegas Video), ulead (videostudio), adobe (premiere). I've used adobe. there are a million tutorials on the www, and it's prominent on all the torrent sites if you're into the 'piracy' thing.

people say 'go apple' because apparently they really like final cut pro. i have always found it comparable to premiere, and never have seen any reason why one piece of software should be a reason to totally switch operating systems. but then, they will claim forever that mac is better at this because it has FCP.

as a disclaimer, I use linux, and use a bunch of totally non-newbie-friendly programs to do my editing and encoding tasks. so my viewpoint on interfaces may be skewed towards the non-braindead.
