This is really good! I love how you show all the Winchesters and their families and why they are who they are. That John and Mary's lives weren't all sunshine and apple pie before the YED came.
Thisjust killed me:
Mary looks into yellow eyes and knows. This was her mother’s end. This is her end. All she’ll be is a face in a picture, worn from age and handling. An image that means Mom, but feels like loss.
And the last line made me cry at the fact that Dean sees Dad as setting an example of him.

Thanks so much! As with most of my stories, this one just started off with one little idea, basically John getting the name Winchester from his mother and not his father and it kind of took on a life of it's own. And I like the idea that John and Mary struggled in their lives before they meant each other. It makes it that much more tragic for John when he loses Mary. And I'm so glad you like Mary's section. It's my attempt at explaining Mary's "It's you" in AHBL. And it just makes sense to me that Dean would follow in John's footsteps. Now, he can understand how it feels from both sides. This is really sad, these lessons of sacrifice and sorrow passed on from parent to child - I've always wondered if Mary and John's families weren't the best, considering the lack of extended family and their close focus (from what we see of Mary, anyway) on their sons.

Thank you! I like the "lessons of sacrifice and sorrow" description because that's essentially what it is. Their whole lives are filled with sorrow that it just seems to color everything else. And I'm so happy you like my version of Mary and John's families. It'd be interesting to explore some more of that. Thanks again!
