Following the harrowing ordeal with the Krynoid, the Doctor had promised to take Sarah on a much-need furlough to Cassiopeia.  As it was, he felt he thoroughly needed the holiday, the perfect opportunity to dispel the lingering ill ease pervading his psyche. Their lives were frequently in danger, but never had they been threatened with such ( Read more... )

She had been surprised to hear her communicator go off while she had been exploring 21st century town life. More than that, she had been surprised to hear the echoes of her name emitting from it. Frowning, Sarah Jane pulled it out of her purse and turned the device over in her hand a couple of times before speaking in to it.

"Hello?"

The Doctor was simultaneously startled and relieved.

"Sarah?" he replied, through his end. "Where are you?"

"Doctor?"

Sarah laughed happily upon recognizing the voice. Noticing a couple of boys playing football a few meters away and still not quite grasping the idea of mobiles, she ducked behind a nearby tree to talk with more privacy.

"Oh, it is you, isn't it? A matter of time too, I should say! I've already met your previous regeneration - and his doppleganger! I was wondering when you'd show up."

He blinked, scratching at his head as he kept the communicator near his mouth. Sarah obviously wasn't on the TARDIS, which unnerved him. Best not to let her know that, though.

"Well of course it's me, Sarah, who did you expect? Wait, my previous regeneration, you say?"

This was intensely interesting.

"Sarah, could you enlighten me at all as to your location?"

He was hoping she knew more than he, but then, even he wasn't certain of anything at the moment, and he was the Doctor!

[ooc: I'm about to head out to dinner, but I'll definitely continue this tonight--just so you know why there's a lag.]

"No," the Doctor answers, "I'm afraid not."

"I beg your pardon, who might you be?"

"I'm the Doctor, just a little over a half-dozen regenerations into your future. I'd ask the same question of you, but that would be a bit pointless. Unless you really wanted to introduce yourself."

"Introductions are a bit arbitrary at this point, wouldn't you say? I do enjoy talking to myself, in any case. I must say, I've certainly taken quite a different direction in this incarnation, haven't I?"

He considered. "Have I been a woman before you?"

Laura knew the odds that it was her Doctor were somewhere between slim and none, but since she'd recovered from her original shock, and wasn't apt to punch him in the stomach the first time she saw him, she couldn't resist answering.

"Doctor?"

He paused. An older voice, void of that plaintive lilt he'd grown accustomed to in Sarah's tone. But...it sounded a bit like her. What was going on here?

"...Sarah?"

"Well, one of them at any rate," she replied with a forced lightness. Whether or not he was her Fourth Doctor, she was going to have to explain the whole mess again and she was not looking forward to it.

He blinked slowly.

"One...of them?"

He couldn't help but notice the way her voice seemed to belie an inner discontent.

"What's gone wrong?" he asked, because evidently, something had.

"Greetings and welcome to the all food network. All food all the time. How may I help you caller?"

A strange greeting, he thought, but ostensibly friendly. Or was it?

"Have you got any ginger beer?"

Because it wasn't quite food, but then, he was never one for the conventional.

Well his voice is certainly cheerful and friendly.

"Planning on torturing people?" he asks, still cheerfully.

The Doctor was startled by the way such a thing was said so pleasantly.

"I usually partake of more...acceptable activities. Like chess, you know, which very rarely results in death, let alone homicide, except that one chess game I observed once on Pritoria V."

The Doctor paused. "Are you?"
