To the Rescue (hopefully) of Zoe

Continued from here.

Once more inside the safety of the TARDIS, the Doctor punched in the coordinates and launched them on their way.

"Let's see what the old girl has to say about our destination," he said, giving the console an affectionate pat before calling up the information on Ord Mantell. Hopefully, the databanks would also give him (or ( Read more... )

The Doctor stood at the console, tugging at his lapels, staring at the display on Ord Mantell that his older form had brought up. He scanned the readout several times, shaking his head more and more as he did. "Well, it sounds about as nice as you said it was, which is to say, not nice at all." He scowled a bit. Were he leading this investigation (which he sort of was) he would have let the TARDIS materalize wherever she felt, on the planet, and investigate from there. But he was somewhat curious to see how his older self handled things. "Well, that narrows it down at little."

"If you're looking for the dregs of the universe, then Or Mantell is an excellent place to start. Which is probably why it's also a good choice for a clandestine think tank to go to ground." His fingers danced over the controls, calling up more specific data. "There are any number of establishments that cater to the buying and selling of information. All of them disreputable. There is one, however, that might be the lesser of several dozen evils. The proprieter owes me a favor." An image shimmered onto the view screen, showing a heavy set humanoid with thick black hair and a moon face.

"Never seen him before," said Jamie. "Who is he, then?"

"A second rate space pirate by the name of Sabalom Glitz."

The Doctor had to wonder how smart it was to introduce himself to someone from his future . . . but then, maybe this was how he met this so-called Sabalom Glitz in the first place. Or maybe it just didn't matter at all, because time and space were bending and none of this was supposed to happen anyway. Things were messed up enough as it was, what difference did a little more make?

"Sabalom Glitz," the Doctor murmured to himself. He spared Jamie a glance. "I'm unfamiliar with him, as well." Then, nodding enthuastically at his older self, he added, "Well, that's better than any lead I've got. What are you waiting for?"

"Right then. Off we go!" The Doctor threw a series of switches, activating the time rotor and sending them on their way with a bit of a lurch.

"Ye kinnae mean to be trusting a pirate!" said Jamie, alarmed.

"I didn't say anything about trusting him," said the Doctor patiently. "But if there's honor among thieves, then Glitz is about as close as we're likely to come on this particular planet. And he can be bought."
