An article in the Metro - Boston's tacky commuter paper - this morning detailed how a U.S. PeeWee sports team got harrassed constantly visiting Canada. The kids got the finger, had referees screaming, "U.S.A. sucks!", heard their national anthem booed at the start of the games.

They came home to legions of Canadian apologies on their answering machine and website, but...yeah, this is insane. Everywhere. I mean, these are kids.

(I am still wrapping my mind around how Michael Moore got to hosting the Oscars.)

Michael Moore didn't host the Oscars; Steve Martin did. Moore won for best documentary and as such got to make a 45 second speech.

D'oh. Yet another reason I should own a television.

From the amount people were discussing Michael Moore the next day, I really thought he hosted.

Hahahahah no.
He just made a very agressive, self-agrnadizing speech that freaked people out, such that even peopel who sort of agree with him were disgusted. Adrian Brody wound up being anti-war in a way that was genuine and articulate and to the very letter exactly the how and why artists and public figures should have opinions and share them.

You know, I really like Pollack's writing. I think he's very entertaining, both in print and in person. And I think he's pretty much on target in this article. But I think an interesting aspect of it is that he's blame-shifting a bit. He's claiming that the fact that he got into two fights in quick succession is indicative that America is nuts now, but he deliberately picked one of those fights by turning a verbal conflict physical, and he certainly doesn't seem to have taken any steps to deescalate the other one. He effectively seems to be saying "My boorish behavior is reflective of a larger American problem."

Which may be true enough. But there'd be less of a problem if people took personal responsibility for their own bad behavior, and took steps to eliminate it, instead of writing entertaining pieces about it.

I agree with rollick people harbored their opinions and ignorance long before there was a war with Iraq (which just may fulfill the goal of giving the people freedom if the carpetbaggers aren't on the heels of the carpet (with new guided precision!) bombers.

Only two weeks and already writers are suffering enuie over this - maybe it is time for America to get over itself and get back to the reality of the world instead of muddling through it with limited vision and self agrandizing dispostion.
