if wishes were horses
I just want to watch an M/M romcom. Or better yet, an M/M action flick. Something where homophobia and unrequited/doomed-to-fail love isn't the central focus of the story. Something that doesn't make me want to toss myself off a roof or drown myself in tears after I finish watching it. Is that too much to ask?

That's exactly the kind of film I want to watch. Just two guys (or girls-- that would be amazing, too) falling in love without the movie calling (extreme) attention to the fact that they're the same gender. Something where it's perceived as 'normal' for the most part, if that makes sense (hope that wasn't offensive).
I really wish someone (talented) would take a chance on a movie like that. Sadly, I doubt it's going to happen any time soon.

I've worked on my share of stories about homophobic-ly doomed loves, but more and more I've been wanting to write stuff where it's just two guys who, even if their love is tragic and doomed, is so for other reasons.
On that note, I would recommend the anime Tiger & Bunny. It's not m/m in the strictest sense, in that the creators have not stated this is an m/m pairing, but the creators have said they intentionally created the characters so that however the audience interprets them is correct. That is, if you see them as a bromance, that's right, but if you see them as a romance, that's right too.

Tiger & Bunny has been on my t0-watch list for ages now. I don't watch much anime anymore* but I'll definitely give it a shot this weekend (mecha + bromance = omgyes).
*Somewhere in the wibbly-wobblyness of time a teenaged version of myself has suddenly burst into tears. I just can't get into anime/manga the way I used to--primarily because the many of the themes/standards/cliches/stereotypes I once enjoyed now annoy the hell out of me. And don't even get me started on yaoi.
Anyway, if you have any more recs feel free to throw them my way. I'd really love to get back into it, but I keep coming across anime/manga that either bore me or frustrate the hell out of me.

I really like T&B though. I was all ready to watch a handful of episodes a day, but the day I got to about the 75% point and couldn't stop. I love that the creators are okay with people shipping it and kind of actively encourage it. >.>

To be entirely honest, I've only seen clips of this movie, but I've had a friend rec it to me, and I adore the fact that it a) was made in 1992 in Asia, b) was directed by a pretty famous and talented Hong Kong director named Wong Kar Wai, and c) doesn't focus on them being gay so much as their relationship.
It isn't a rom com. It's still a sad film, but it's ultimately not about their sexuality or prejudice caused by it. It's a movie about two people in a very human sort of mutually destructive relationship, and how they navigate through it.
