Star Trek 2009

I originally posted this so I could link it to my facebook page, but I realized that I really should post it here. Mostly so I can stop writing book-long replies on everyone else's reviews of the film ( Read more... )

Interestingly, I enjoyed the actor who played McCoy the most. He felt like Bones and made a true effort to become Deforest Kelley. I appreciated it.
I didn't realize he was Eomer.

I just flat couldn't emphathise with Kirk. He felt just too much like the cocky "Shermanator" character from the "American Pie" movies. I know that is what Kirk was supposed to be before he calmed down a bit after years of being Captain. But his smug attitude just kind of made me want to kick him in the nards.

Spock was good.

Yeah, lack of empathy for Kirk... I think that's what I was missing from him too...

Without a doubt, he was the best new cast member and the shining star of the new film

Absolutely. However mixed I am on the movie as a whole, I loved Quinto/Spock - both the character arc (easily the strongest in the film) and Quinto's performance. He's not Nimoy - who could be? - but I don't believe many people out there could have done better. And I didn't think of Sylar once, which was refreshing. ;) Spock is my favorite TOS character, so I'm doubly glad the new take didn't disappoint me.

I was impressed with Urban/Bones too (probably my second favorite of the new cast), though like you there were a couple of points where I thought perhaps he was trying too hard.

I thought Pine did fine as Kirk - he has enough of the mannerisms without trying to completely ape Shatner. But I didn't feel like the character went through much growth, had much of an arc, especially compared to Spock, so I wasn't invested in him.

I completely understand feeling mixed about the new film. I'm still struggling a little myself, because something something about liking the new version just feels disloyal.

I still haven't seen even one episode of Heroes, so I didn't have the whole "seeing Quinto as another character" problem. I really do need to get and watch season one of that series... Maybe over the summer I'll find some time. :)

I'd almost say do yourself a favor and stop after season 1: S1 is cracky fun with a reasonably solid arc. But after that, the show (IMO) just becomes more and more sloppy and uneven, and Sylar's presence just becomes more and more irritating/ridiculous.

I had that same kind of formative relationship with the original series. It "set" the way my world works in lots of ways. (When I was a little girl I wanted to grow up to be Uhura. I was crushed to learn that little blonde headed blue eyed white girls seldom grow up to be beautiful black women.)

Ditto all the gushing. :-)

LOL! I just remember having issues with the idea that Nimoy was really human... and that vulcans did not, nor would they ever, exist. I still have problems with that one. :)

I am so totally waiting to go see it. I am waiting on Tress to be home so she doesn't miss it. Movies are like a great pilgramage to civilization lol
