I will say that the combat system was great, but it's kind of sad how the whole "GOD IS EVIL! YOU MUST KILLLLLLLLLL HIM!" archetype took over JRPGs, after that point (though yeah, I know, the Breath of Fire series flirted with that concept prior to the Xenoverses).
