Title: Persistence of Vision
Pairing: Sam-centric. Gen. Post Sam/Jess.
Rating: R, for violence and language
Word Count: 13,600
Summary: When Sam’s power fully kicks in, how long will it take him to get used to it, and how much help can he really be on the hunt to kill a ghost in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula?
Warnings: S1 spoilers, all the way through. Run-on sentences. Twisting of the Kübler-Ross model. Any and all errors relative to established SPN-canon spoken of herein are mine and mine alone.
Disclaimer: I own nothing except the vague elements of spotty-plot, four hundred and three books, and one slightly demented cat.

Author’s Notes: Dedicated mostly to sappylilartpunk, for taking me to Harlow Lake and saying, ‘Y’know what? The Winchesters should come here.’ Dedicated in part to everyone who was at the Burger King in Kalamazoo (Exit 80) on 04 August between 4:15 and 6:00, especially that couple with the amazingly well-behaved children. Also, to everyone who reviewed both ‘FI’ and ‘Hamartia’ and said, ‘There needs to be more.’ Lo and behold, there is.

’Verse Notes: This is part of my ‘Fundamental Image’-verse, or, as I’m calling it, the ‘Fire and Need’-verse. Fundamental Image was written first, and is Sam/Dean about five years in the future. Hamartia came next, and focuses on the first three months of Sam’s freshman year at Stanford. PoV takes place a year or so after S1 and fits in with this ‘verse, but also can be read alone.

Sam’s feeling a steady pounding in his head and the EMF in Dean’s pocket is making noise, and he can see a steady rise of power around the woman as the lake turns darker. “Shit,” he says, and shoots at the ghost again after muttering a quick and dirty blessing over the shotgun and rock-salt bullet. This one hits her as well, blows her head to smithereens, and she disappears. Dean turns to him, but Sam says, “She’s not gone, not for good,” and it’s not just the rhythm in his head telling him this; even if the EMF’s gone silent, the water keeps getting darker and darker.
