I think it's because they are just... demons. In the beginning, I hated to fight and kill but it became a natural way of survival, after.

Utena knows nothing about killing, but she does have a nice pair of rose-colored glasses.

Huh. More that I was scared for my life and I got to kill or be killed? Lately, I began to feel a taste for battle but that was during the period I was an idiot.

(ooc; I knooooooow. She's so idealistic. One thing I liked more of the Anime than the novel is this scene in the end for first season where Youko's on the throne, looking so weary and battered, commenting to her classmate Yuka-Anime expanded role character she's never in Youko's journey of the novel- that this place full of blood is the throne room and would soon be killed, that the pretender was buried in her garden because her family left Kei. She's musing bitterly about the way of the throne being a blood path, tossing her sword down and beginning to sob on her friend's shoulder. I like Yuka's thoughts, "In that moment, I realized that Nakajima lost something very precious to sit there." Speaking of Youko's innocence. TL;DR. LOOK pretty screencaps: 1, 2, 3.
