Going below 4.4 (KitKat) might cause problems with app compatibility if the developer no longer supports older versions. I would go Lollipop (5.0) if you could, since you third-party apps can help regain the ability to read and modify data located anywhere on external storage (KitKat put that restriction on, so it eats up a lot of internal memory).

Thanks for the input! I'm starting from scratch and don't plan on really using it for more than calls and texts but I'll keep the app issue in mind.
