If I don't make it through this program I am seriously considering asking to be transferred to the army instead of being sent to the fleet as a conventional mechanic. If I did I would almost certainly be sent to the middle of the desert, but not in California.

It's too hands on. I like to be comfortably immersed in theory. I asked to be a Reactor Operator and they made me a Mechanic... So I asked to be an Engineering Laboratory Technician and got turned down... I have almost no natural mechanical ability at all... unless by that you mean "when you press this thingy, what happens to that thingy;" I can generally puzzle out that kind of thing if I can see all the parts... which I can't because they are surrounded by steam, enclosed in three inches of steel, and then painted and lagged. And I am really not good at all at standing watch, which is the most important thing. If I fail out I'll be sent out to the fleet as a conventional mechanic, which will embody everything that's dull about being a nuclear mechanic, without the interesting parts. And I would be the guy who fixes the shit pumps. At least in the army I would have my dignity.
