{Essay} ❀ Relations

Lenalee→ Surrogate family, to Kanda's best estimation of what that's like. And almost an Alma replacement, having been his first friend since that incident and sharing a number of similarities to him. Lenalee is the closest person Kanda has in the Order, to the point where even normally oblivious Kanda can pick up on little habits and feelings of hers that she doesn't necessarily express. He cares about her a lot, and while he can't speak up to her about his past (or much about himself in general), he does trust her. She's one of few people he's not stubbornly resistant to because she'll beat the shit out of him if he is, even letting her get away with knocking him into shape (which says a lot about the respect he has for her, that she can bop him with clipboards and make him pull back when he wasn't listening to Reever). She's also a bit intimidating to him, because she's not afraid of getting onto his case when he's acting out and he can't be grouchy and angry and turn her away like he can everyone else. Lena is mean and hits him okay. :(

Marie→ One of very few people who is aware of his past, because he was involved in it. Marie has a very calm and mellow disposition, and Kanda liked being around that. He's easy to be around and get along with, rather than being a frustration. He has a lot of respect for Marie as a person (he can also get away with reigning in Kansa' attitude), and is more willing to take into his account his opinion. Part of the attachment Kanda has to him is based in him knowing his past, and Kanda being able to trust him with it, but his personality is also very compatible with his, so they've developed a closeness.

Daisya→ Friends, but not really close. Kanda doesn't trust a lot of himself to Daisya or as attached to him as he is to others like Lenalee who mean a lot to him. But he is still important, and they can actually get along with one another well enough. Their friendship is mostly a connection through their job, not one with a whole lot of lasting strength to it (if they had parted on other terms--losing Daisya was still a punch in the gut).

Tiedoll→ Constant headache and annoyance. His attempts to be a surrogate father and build an intimately, familial relationship with Kanda grates him to no end. But he does respect Tiedoll as a competent General and would fight for him like any other Exorcist, just not as a sentimental man trying to build some sort of connection where Kanda doesn't want it. Especially a parental one, that's kind of touchy what with losing the memories of his real ones (or the concept of parents in general).

Alma→ This is so complicated I need another essay for it.

Lavi→ Friends, it could be said. They can get along when Lavi isn't purposefully pushing buttons. Kanda can actually be willing to spend time and talk with him when he's just being an annoyance. But there's a distance between them--they don't have a close, strongly built bond with one another. Kanda doesn't open up to Lavi, and Lavi does the same, so while there's a sense of attachment their friendship isn't a lasting one. Kanda cares about Lavi, but not as strongly as other people like Lenalee, and when they have to part ways he won't think much of it, because their job is the only thing they have in common that keeps them together.

Allen→ Stupid, annoying, martyristic Beansprout. Kanda actually has a genuine dislike for him--it's not all just his facade. Allen is a lot of things that frustrate Kanda, and that go against his own line of thinking. As a result they fight like cats and dogs, because Kanda's not shy about announcing his distaste for Allen. He really, genuinely doesn't like the kid. He's a continual rival, them having just the right similarities and differences to constantly be at one another.

But on the other hand, Allen is a fellow Exorcist. So much as he pisses Kanda off, he's still fight by his side and defend him. And while he won't hesitate to kill him if the 14th breaks out, he does try to avoid it until there's really no saving him. And he does trust Allen to fight the 14th off (even if he's a little uncertain it's the right idea), to stand strong, even if he'd never admit it. He can rely on Allen as an Exorcist, and recognizes that Allen may, in the end, be their only chance left at winning this war.

Of course, the recent arc causing a major shift in their relationship with one another. Not that Allen's personality is less contradictory to his own, but his actions in stopping their fight and helping both him and Alma despite how stubborn and frustrating they were being has brought Kanda around to accepting it. That's how Allen is and it's not necessarily bad like he acted like it was before. He won't look down on Allen anymore, and his trust in his strength goes beyond just his duty as an Exorcist to him as a person as well (and his trust that he can handle the 14th is reaffirmed). They'll still probably bicker, though, that's just kinda how they are and Kanda's a grumpy ass.

Komui→ Frustrating, lazy, dramatic sister-complex of a supervisor. But regardless of how frustrating he can be, Kanda has a lot of trust and respect for Komui. He really does try to make things better for them as Exorcists, and he cares and Kanda can recognize that. After being treated as nothing more than a tool of war, having someone in authority actually treat him like he was human was a turnaround. Plus his coming to the Order did wonders for Lenalee while she was at her lowest.

Zhu→ Has a genuine fondness for him, despite the connections to the project. He was just a cook, after all, not directly involved. And Kanda did go to him to talk about the original lotus flower he was seeing around. Zhu is also the swordsmith for his weapon.

Bak→ Kanda doesn't really have anything against Bak personally, but it was his parents who helped in creating him, and lied to him, and turned him into what he is now and he hates it. He's willing to give Bak the chance to turn things around, but doesn't really expect him to have enough power for that to be plausible. Especially with the Thirds around now.

Fou→ Annoying guardian deity he doesn't really get along with due to their clashing personalities, and thus avoids interacting with. Know she was aware of the project and knows that she was the person Alma saw before, so there's some underlying bitterness there.

Leverrier→ Possibly the person Kanda hates most in the Order, utterly and completely. He knows he's just a tool to Leverrier, he knows he was responsible for what happened to him, knows he's traumatized Lenalee, and it's only his desire to keep his promise and the power imbalance between them which is keeping him from tearing him apart with his bare hands.

Jerry→ Best soba maker ever, and the one who introduced him to it.

Didi→ Science Department member he knew from his childhood. There's implications he's grown some sort of closeness with the HQ department members, though Didi stands out as having drunkenly kissed him when he was 13. Kanda is rather embarrassed by it and goes into rage when he starts talking about it.

Edgar/Touyi/other scientists→ Sort of a wavering opinion. He still hasn't forgiven them for what they did, but his hatred and isn't near as vehement. He doesn't care that he wasn't able to get any sort of revenge, nor is he interested in finding a way to do so now. It just isn't important. And, while he still has an unfavorable opinion of them, he doesn't think they deserved getting brutally slaughtered by Alma.
