Don't Look Back in Anger (said the Suck Fairy)

There's a lot to be said for self delusionment when it comes to matters of the heart

-Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, Northern Exposure

The idea for this week's installment was lifted directly from the Entertainment Weekly website, where it appeared under the unglamorous title “A visit from the Suck Fairy”. The premise is, what book/movie/ ( Read more... )

I read this last night and I've been combing the recesses of my mind for the right answers -- or at least for an experience that I can share with the specificity that you showed here.

With books, I don't think I have one because books I truly love I've read again and again, and those that I only read once obviously didn't grab me with enough of a hook to interest me. So I can't come up with that.

As far as movies go, one that I just loved in the theater and later had a rude awakening about was Speed 2. Did you ever see that? It's so riDONKulous, I'm shamed to even think that I saw it like three times at the theater. I think I was blinded by Jason Patric's beautiful blue eyes and hairy chest, and by my unfathomable love and devotion to Sandra Bullock. That's my only explanation.

TV shows: without a doubt: Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Back in the day, this was my go to show for romance; I just adored the Sully/Michaela relationship. Years later, I rewatched some episodes I'd saved that were my ALL TIME FAVES, and the cheese was ( ... )

Oh! Dr Quinn and her impossibly hot sidekick Sully -- what WAS Sully, anyway, the nurse? I mean, he was always hanging around but I can't remember why. LOL. Great choice. I think the major flaw of that show was that it was completely run by Jane Seymour and her hubby to spotlight her and her character, so there was no way Dr. Mike was going to be anything less than perfect. Which is probably why it hasn't aged well? Just a thought ( ... )

Sully was like the local Indian liaison. He'd adopted some of their ways for some reason--I don't recall now why. He tried to keep things good between the natives and the white people. He didn't like Dr. Mike when she first turned up, and he was all sad and lonesome because his wife died during childbirth or something. Now that you say that about Jane Seymour, I see what you mean. She was a little too perfect, from my recollections.

Yes, please convert me to the Beatles, because I really don't get it.

Oh, the original Speed is DELIGHTFUL! Hot, muscly Keanu, sweet, sassy Sandy, and evil awful Dennis Hopper? It's a great film. The sequel, not so much. I remember my first viewing of the original, I watched it alone, and I was shaking at the end of it!

I remember loving Greencard! Maybe I need to rewatch. And I always liked NE, but that was pre-fangirling days.

Ok, this is a thinker.

Used to love, but now know it sucks...Question: did the whole thing have to suck, or could it start great and gradually suck? Because most shows do that.

TV: Can I pick Growing Pains? I used to love it! It sucks! (But I was 12, so I probably can't be held accountable for my opinion.) How about Lost? (*ducks*)

Movie: People will probably hate me for this, but I recently rented Flashdance, which I remember loving like a living thing, and omg it SUCKED. Just me?

Book: I can easily pick Twilight since I hated it/liked it/hated it, but I still think it falls in the 'so bad it's good' category. Here's mine: Eat, Pray, Love. Self-indulgent shit.

YOU CANNOT PICK LOST! *throws tomatoes*

I think being wholly aware of how awful Twilight is rules it out, because I did consider it, but I always knew it sucked. I wasn't unaware of that, and then later came to the realization. I did eventually come to the HATES WITH THE FIRE OF THOUSAND SUNS emotion, but that's a different topic.

You don't have any music ones, huh? You non-music lover.

I don't think I've ever seen Flashdance and now I don't wanna.

Flashdance was iconic of the 80s, but upon a new viewing, it fell a bit flat for me.

I just forgot music! I do love music! Hmmm....

Well, of course I know what FD is--leg warmers and "What a Feelin'" but...I never saw it. I should have seen it when I was young before I would know it was CHEESY.

HEY YOU

Hope all is well. *hugs*. I was a BIG Remingtonn Steele fan in the day, hon. Not surprising we both were. I loved Laura and Rem, their repartee, the banter, her hats, the beginning monologue ...follow

I'm not going to brick throw about U2, either, because I agree with you.

LOL @ Go Ask Alice! If I remember rightly, it had a blue cover and was considered a wee bit risque down here.

TV wise for me is: Bev. Hills 90210 I watched it (sometimes) as an adult and (sort of) liked it. Just YUK. Whhhhy?

Musically, it's lots of random acts from the 80s, one hit wonders most of them, and they sound awkward on listening today. BUT, what you've said here

The art and entertainment that enriches us on the journey should hold a special place in our soul, even if our former fondness baffles us a bit.is the key. If we hadn't LOVED these elements during our youth (embraced the pop culture of the time) then our current selves would have no basis. No depth ( ... )

I still think S3 of 90210, the height of the Kelly/Dylan/Brenda triangle is the best season. Of course it's somewhat cheesy, but it's a soap opera, hello! But the chemistry between Jennie Garth and Luke Perry stands the test of time.

You never saw About a Boy? That's Hugh Grant's best film, IMHO. He always plays the same guy in every film, but I felt like this guy in this film actually had an arc.

I did see 'About a Boy' and liked it, but I adored Hugh initially, then he dwindled in my estimation even thought WaB was his best, for sure.

I see Amy *points upwards* needs some tomatoes thrown at her too. LOL

*waves*

Oh, and 90210...yeah, I realized it was a soap opera a bit too late, ROFL. I was only watching for the plot. *laffs more*

I wasn't throwing tomatoes at you. Insulting 90210 is slightly different than insulting LOST, yanno?

:-)

I was 17 when the Kelly/Dylan/Brenda triangle erupted, and in my last year of school. (I actually graduated with the West Bev kids!) So, with Luke Perry being my teen idol and all I didn't expect anything to hold up over time, but last year I rented S3 and rewatched it with adult eyes. Certainly there were moments of cheese (David, being a music artist was right there at the top), but there was also a thread of reality thanks to the aforementioned Jennie/Luke chem. It was just kinda fresh in my memory. But it's not like I wanted to keep watching the series. I didn't rent S4, for example. I just let it end where it ended.

Because it kind of sucks. ;-)
