Okay wow, small world! This was totally already in my memories (both essays here) a long time ago, and I forgot to come back and comment. :D

What I like most is that, as much as people parodize Cloud's transition with the song 'Zero to Hero', it really wasn't that unbelievable considering his circumstances, or that he ISN'T an emo/whiny--he's a loner with reason, but he's completely a team player too. I never thought he was (emo/whiny), and I don't know if you ever read Super Sized, a KH AU with Cloud in it, the author there doesn't either. In fact, most of Cloud's side of the story is a parody of how everyone treats him in fandom, and for that that story's gone down in my favorite forever. I must say however, that like Ed Elric from Full Metal Alchemist, canonically Cloud seems to have the sex drive of a dead cat, even around the busty Tifa, so where the opposing, 180 spectrum Romeo!OOC Cloud comes from baffles me to no end as well.

Ha! That happens to me too, as hard as I resist it.

You're right, Cloud's transition isn't that unbelievable at all when you really stop to think about it; fanon just makes it easy to forget how he was actually portrayed in the game/Smile/AC. (So, a fic where he isn't like that? Must search it out!) And I totally agree about the Romeo!OOC Cloud. As much as I like Cloud/Tifa well enough, I have hard time seeing him ever really settle in a relationship, and if he did, it sure as hell wouldn't be easy. I tend to be gen when it comes to Cloud, really.

So maybe AC with Cloud's jaded-ness isn't even really emo: he's just spent everything since Meteor taking care of other people, and now with Geostigma he had to sort out how to deal with himself, especially in the event that he'd die. Except that was a mess by itself because he doesn't know where to begin. This is a really good point. Before AC, I actually imagined that he would be the one doing soul-searching in order to learn to deal with him, and although helping others out is also like ( ... )
