Character: Dante

Spoilers: Spoilers from the first and second game.

When I first saw the commerical for Devil May Cry I wasn’t really taken to it. It was getting late and I had some random channel on to pass the time. Watching a guy in his robe tear up his house with one nice looking sword was a rather odd commerical for a game. But the more I saw it, the more I became intrigued. Once I saw the broad-shoulders, white hair, gun toting hottie, I was hooked. Its like Tomb Raider. For girls.

It didn’t take much for me to become a fangirl of the smart-mouthed hunter. So as I write this, I’m going to take into consideration how Dante would want it written. I only hope I get it right.

Behind Blue Eyes

An essay on Dante from Devil May Cry

"This guy eyes you, you can bet even devils may cry.’’

-Testimony of informant Enzo Ferrino

There are tales of a legend.

Two thousand years ago, the Underworld rose in attempts to take over the human world. One of these minions of darkness awoke to justice and choose to fight for the humans. He saved the world from damnation, sealing the gateway to the underworld for centuries. This dark knight reborn was named Sparda, and thus the legend was born.

Later, Sparda quietly reigned in the human world, taking a human wife and had two sons.

While the legend of Sparda is still known, we do not dwell in the dark knights past for very long. Oh no. This is the story for his son, Dante.

Devil May Cry is a game that seems to a have a universal theme. Good vs. Evil. The good guys fighting the evil and sending it back to whatever hellish place it popped out of. But while this seems shallow and overdone, Devil May Cry goes just bit deeper. Yes, it focusses on the cool combos and nice weapons, but you dive into the Hunters past and present, and maybe his future.

Behind the leather

Dante: "Woah! Slow down babe! Well well, what do we have here? Nature calls, its in the back.’’
Trish: “So, you’re the handyman who’ll do any dirty job, am I correct?”
Dante: “Almost. I only take ‘special’ jobs, if you know what I mean.’’
Devil May Cry - Intro movie

You learn early on a few things about our hunter. He’s obviously easy-going. You can tell this by just seeing the condition of his office. Pizza boxes, empty liquor bottles some nice nekkie girl pictures(which he conviently places his sword over her boobs.) a pool table that needs some serious work and the demon heads mounted and displayed so proudly on his walls. Even when Trish bust through his doors on a motorcycle(that she stole) he doesn’t seemed phased. He merely finds this amusing.

Can you see the personality forming? He’s a mans man. He drinks. He carries two big ass guns, handles his sword very nicely, and he’s got girls on his walls. Dante envisions what every man would want to be. Big, bad-ass and to top it off, you’ve got goregous girls literally breaking your door down. Doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you’d take home to mom.

Trish: “So you’re the man who lost a mother and a brother to evil twenty years ago, the son of the legendary dark knight Sparda, Mr. Dante.”
Dante: “I figure in this bussiness alone, if I kill each one of you that comes, I’m bound to hit the jackpot sooner or later.’’
Trish: “Then I guess you should be used to this sort of thing.”
Devil May Cry - Intro movie

Ahh, I smell alittle anger in that tone. So, it seems that Dante has a motive. Since we’re not really educated on Dante’s background we learn from the all-knowing Trish that he lost both his mother and his brother evil. Obviously someone down below held a grudge against Sparda and his family.

Dante: "Even as a child I had powers, there’s demonic blood in me.’’
Devil May Cry - Intro movie

Dante owns up to his heritage after being struck in the chest by his own sword. This was after Trish taunted him with the infamous line "Didn’t your daddy teach you how to use a sword?’’ As all this goes on, you’re gonna go ‘wtf?’. Why would Dante, after having his door busted down with a motorcycle, a sword thrown into his chest and being mocked would he go with Trish? The sun glasses she had been wearing. Dante is taken aback by the likeness Trish has to the woman in the photograph that was once on his desk but is now of the ground, the frame smashed. Was this the sole reason he went along with Trish? Because the likeness of her and his mother are almost identical, that if he goes along to this ‘Mallet’ island to take of business to destroy the gateway and Mundus the big cheese himself, he’ll be able to get around his ‘mother’ for those precious moments?

To Arms

So, Dante makes it to Mallet island. Very early on Trish goes her own way about getting to the top. Thus Dante is left alone to fend for himself. Once within the castles walls, he is literally sealed in. There is no way to go but deeper.

Phantom: " I sensed something bigger. What a disappointing catch.’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Three: Destroyer of Ardor

Something bigger indeed. Throughout all the encounters does Dante show the monsters and minions of ‘Mundus’. Phantom is a general as you would say. Dante holds the key to many thinks. Linked with his past., present and not to distant future. While his father was a full demon, Dante is not. So when desperate times call for desperate measures, Dante aquires a new skill, after being struck down(again) by the new sword, Alastor. Devil Trigger. ‘Tis a beautiful thing.

Phantom: "You…you are not human..what are you? The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda? It can’t be.’’
Dante: “Your right I’m his son, Dante. Sweet dreams.’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Eight: The Legendary Dark Knight Returns

Its made perfectly clear in Phantoms death that the son of Sparda has returned. With a vengenace. Repentance for his mother and brother. To hit that ‘jackpot’. It’s made very clear to Mundus that the Sparda is back, but in the form of his son.

Dante: "You can’t fight with that wound!’’
Griffon: “Master! Grant me one last surge of power to defeat him!’’
Mundus: "Griffon, you have failed me.’’
Griffon: "No master no!’’
Devil May Cry -- Mission Fifteen: Wheel of Destiny

The penalty for failure is death. While Phantom has already met his fate and Griffon has met his. This action angers Dante. Killing his own. Some kind of sick punishment. While Trish stands behind him and comments on how well he defeated the Griffon the only thoughts and words in the hunters mind is destroying Mundus. Those who are not loyal and turn their backs on their own soldiers should not be given the chance to live, let alone reign over the world.

Ties that bind us

Dante: "This is the last stinking hole that I’d thought I’d find anyone with some guts.’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Four: Black Knight

Nelo Angelo is a person you meet a few times throughout the game. As soon as the first battle between the two winds down and Angelo has Dante exactly where he wants him, something dangles into his view; a pendant. Upon seeing the red jewel attached to a chain does Angelo step back in disbelief, holding his head. He makes a hastey exit. But why?

Maria(Dante’s Mom): "Dante, Virgil. Happy Birthday.’’
Dante&Virgil: "Wow! Cool!’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Seventeen: Parted Memento

The amulet. The third and final time Dante faces Nelo Angel do we learn something very improtant from the things he has left behind. As the man defeat drops to his knees and holds his head in hands as he beings to fade away into blue embers does something clank against the floor. That looks shockingly like Dante’s amulet.

Virgil was supposedly killed.

But its apparently obvious that his brother was indeed alive. He was the one to kill his brother. Placing the pendants back to back, forms one.

Which allows him to enter the demon world. A mothers gift, leading him to his destiny.

Trish: "Dante..why did you save me?’’
Dante: "I don’t want to see your face anymore..’’
Trish: "Dante!’’
Dante: "Don’t come any closer your devil! You may look like my mother but you will never have her fire!’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Twenty: Showdown With Nightmare

We finally learn the reason Dante went along with this whole scherade in the first place. Trish looked like his mother. He followed her without too much of a fuss to Mallet island to destroy Mundus and the gateway, only to find she had betrayed him. Working for Mundus was Trish’s occupation and her plot was to lure the demon hunter so he could be killed. In the final battle with Nightmare, Trish aids the monster. She called Dante a fool. Foolish humans. After saving the woman who betrayed him from being killed, she naturally asks why.

There’s her answer. It seems Dante may have a mother complex. Or could this be intentional?

Mundus: "If you have a need for a mother, I can make you a new one.’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Twenty-two: Legendary Battle

We finally learn the reasoniong behind it. Mundus knew about Dante’s mother. Thus created someone who looked like her to lead him to Mallet Island. To distract Dante, so she could find an opening in and take a killing blow on him. It was Trish’s sole purpose to bring Dante’s downfall.

Guess it didn’t work.

Dante: "I should of…I should of..I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Twenty-two: Legendary Battle

In a final act to get Dante, Mundus takes Trish placing her against the wall(how she stayed there I’ll never know, because she wasn’t shackled) telling him that if he moves, she will die. This does not go well with Dante. Getting mouthy, Mundus takes it upon himself to deliver the ‘killing blow’ to Dante. But gasp! Trish was not chained to wall. Her eyes open and she calls his name, jumping down.

And took the shot meant for him.

This is the breaking point for Dante. Gripping her body to his chest he says the famous ‘fill you with light!’ line. He cries. Trish proved that she was more than a mere creation of Mundus. Which is why when Dante goes to fight and end Mundus’s killing spree on his own kind to an end, he leaves both the amulet and ‘Sparda’s’ sword. It had originally been the Force Edge, the default sword you are equipped with. With Virgil’s death, the sword transforms into its true form. A present from daddy dearest.

Maria(Dante’s Mother): "Don’t worry Dante, you can do it. It’ll be okay.’’
Dante: "Wha…wha..m-mother?!’’
Trish: "Dante! Use my power!’’
Devil May Cry - Mission Twenty-three: Mother’s Guide

And its Trish to the rescue! God only knows how she got there. Maybe it was Dante’s emotions. Or perhaps the amulet he left on her chest? Whatever the reason may be, shes seen the light. She gives her power to Dante. So in one arm is Trish and the other is his own power. Shooting the twin guns Ebony and Ivory, does Dante send Mundus back where he came.

Don’t let the door hit ya, where the shoulda dog bit ya Mundus.

Happy endings?

Trish: "Devil Never Cry? Yes? Great. Okay, wheres the place? This ones big, had the password.’’
Dante: "Good, lets get ‘em in ten minutes. Can’t let a single of them suckers live.’’
Trish: "Five minutes.’’
Dante: "Heh. More than enough.’’

Author’s Notes

Whew! I did it! Still reading? Good. :D I hope you enjoyed it as much I enjoyed writing it. I’m actually very glad I signed up for this. After buying and beating Devil May Cry and beating it, I was obsessed. I went as far as naming my cat Dante.
I went along with my game guide so much as events taking place. Also, I only used the first Devil May Cry as reference. The second had better costumes, but lacked plot.
