Ho! Ho! Ho! Have Three Holiday Season Podfics!

Dec 19, 2010 16:54

So, today's the fourth Sunday of Advent. Christmas is in 6 days. Walmart is reviving it's Black Friday sales at 9pm on Christmas Eve. Though I won't be there to go shopping, I do have holiday-themes podfics to help make these last few days before gift-giving more bearable. In ascending order, I present three podfics, complete with musical accompaniment, in three rather disparate fandoms - hopefully, there's some Spirit of the Season for everyone on the internet ;-)

1. First up is mine eyes have seen thy salvation, by boosette. Clocking in at 15 minutes, it's a bit of Star Trek Reboot Mirror'verse Kirk/Bones Christmas fic. The intro/ending song is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", as performed by Aimee Mann (my absolute favorite rendition of this song - I just love her voice here). I'm pretty sure that this is the kind of fic that's not only Christmas-appropriate, but listen-able all year long - there's backstory explored and developed for the Mirror'verse which I think is really clever, depth given to the characters' motivations besides "grow a goatee...stabity stab stab....to the agony booth!" My fave Mirror'verse fics are all along the lines of evil-because-we're-smart, not evil-because-the-author-likes-gratuitous-violence, and this is even better. Since I seem to be mucking up the raving review, here's boosette's summary: "The Gospel According to St. Bones or, what kind of people celebrate the life and works of a first-century Jewish mystic/healer who preached peace and forgiveness as ideal in the mirror universe?"

2. Next in the queue is A Merry McShep Christmas, a cracky SGA-AU written by suki_blue. Featuring head-elf!Rodney and toy-testing-elf!John and SatanSanta!Caldwell, this podfic is all about life in the North Pole as they get ready for Christmas in the Pegasus Galaxy. I smiled throughout the entire fic, and was cracking up at this line: "Someone has mixed up children’s toys with adult. Vibrators are missing. Everything needs to be unwrapped or I am afraid someone may get quite a shock on Christmas morning. I dread to think where human adult female will stick Special Edition Daedalus." It's 25 minutes of Christmas cheer, including Johnny Mathis singing "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", and just plain fun.

3. Lastly, and longest, is a J2 fic which is not strictly about Christmas - I recognize that not everyone celebrates Jesus's birthday, but everyone enjoys Black Friday! Seriously, besides Arbor Day, Black Friday's gotta be one of the world's best loved holidays, right? ;-) It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, written by saone77, is fantastic. Usually I'm not overly thrilled by real-life-ish RPF, but I'd swear Danneel Harris in this fic is actually my cousin Ashley. We've done the Black Friday mall-a-thon every year together for the last seven years or so, and this is exactly her - point her in the direction of the shoe sales and get out of the way.... Plus, there's crazy relatives, toy scalpers, and a trip to the ER. Madcap hijinks abound. Intro/exit music is "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year", by Amy Grant (she's a holiday staple in our house, so I couldn't leave her out). Best line? "...But those are the old Captain Awesome toys. This is the new Captain Awesome toy. The super, deluxe, limited edition, twelve inch, star-spangled, Captain Awesome toy.”

Hope everyone's gotten their shopping done by now, and if not, well....my well-wishes are with you. I'm off to go giftwrap!
