Horror Movie a Day 2018

Oct 01, 2018 23:11

My goal for the month of October is to watch an average of one horror movie a day. Under the cut you'll find my list of watched movies, plus rating and some thoughts about them. Lemme know if you have any suggestions for what I should watch this month!

ETA: Day 31 up! IT IS FINISHED :D Also, I am including thrillers on this list. Bc I can. And not so horror Halloween movies.
  1. Piranha 3D (2010) | ★★☆☆☆ | This was... so badly made lol And the end! It felt like it just suddenly stopped in the middle of the action. Tbh there was way too much attention paid to the college coeds and porno girls and not enough to the piranhas for me.
  2. 47 Metres Down (2017) | ★★★★☆ | I love shark movies, so I figured I'd enjoy this. And it was actually even better than I thought! It really caught my attention and had me anxious about how it was going to turn out, which I think is definitely a point in its favor.
  3. As Above, So Below (2014) | ★★★★☆ | I really had no idea what this movie was about going in, but it turned out to be really good and definitely had my attention throughout. It was kind of like Tomb Raider as a horror movie, which I thought was a surprisingly great combination.
  4. Children of the Corn (1984) | ★★☆☆☆ | Booooring. I didn't find it creepy or scary at all tbh. I'm also just not a fan of movies that use Christianity as such a plot pillar, so it's not surprising I didn't like it.
  5. IT (2017) | ★★★☆☆ | To be perfectly honest, I didn't like this one nearly as much as the 1990 version. It felt really draggy, most of the music didn't fit the genre, and the Pennywise scenes came off as more cringy cheesy to me than anything.
  6. The Windmill (2016) | ★★☆☆☆ | This movie was incredibly predictable, but also somehow had a really disappointing ending to me. It was just so stereotypical basic horror movie with almost comical violence that I couldn't really get into it tbh.
  7. Winchester (2018) | ★★★★☆ | I wouldn't say this movie is scary as such, but it didn't have jump scares (which is a good thing imo) and had a great creepy atmosphere. I really enjoyed the Winchester ladies and this take on Sarah Winchester's building obsession.
  8. The Conjuring (2013) | ★★★☆☆ | I'm having a hard time coming up with something to say about this movie. It was fine, nothing terrible but nothing amazing either. I liked the Warrens a lot, and it was interesting to see them since I've read quite a bit about them.
  9. The Sixth Sense (1999) | ★★★★☆ | This movie was surprisingly sweet and heartwarming?? Not a very horror-y horror movie either, but I really enjoyed it.  Also, idk how, but I managed to not be spoiled for the twist ending almost twenty years later so that was neat.
  10. The Amityville Horror (1979) | ★★★☆☆ | Slow as fuck, but not really surprising for a 70s movie tbh. Not really bad, but I found the ending rather abrupt and more than a little disappointing. It felt like a lot (a LOT) of buildup with no real resolution.
  11. A Quiet Place (2018) | ★★★★☆ | I enjoyed this movie, though I don't think I liked it as much as I was expecting to from what I'd heard about it. Maybe it would have been better in a theater? But I really loved that there was a deaf actress and they used sign language!
  12. Urban Legend (1998) | ★★★★☆ | This movie was almost painfully 90s, but it was actually a much more enjoyable watch than I'd expected. I also was not expecting who the killer turned out to be, so that was fun too.
  13. The Mothman Prophecies (2002) | ★★★☆☆ | I was honestly expecting a lot more from this movie? Idk, it barely felt like it was about Mothman at all, and I was just waiting the whole time for the bridge collapse. Not that it wasn't overall an ok movie. Just maybe not a good Mothman one imo.
  14. Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) | ★★★★☆ | This movie was weird and had a lot of plot lines that kind of came up out of nowhere and had no resolution. I didn't mind too much though? Maybe bc so much naked Chris Hemsworth chest, but also it was an engaging and enjoyable movie.
  15. Dead Again (1991) | ★★★★☆ | Well, it certainly didn't go in the direction I thought it would lol Which is good bc it kept me on my toes in an otherwise fairly slow movie. I'm a big Kenneth Branagh fan, so of course he was lovely, but there were also a lot of other big names too!
  16. Halloween (1978) | ★★★☆☆ | A hearty meh from me lol I know it's a classic, but I honestly just didn't find it very interesting or scary. I think it just felt... flat? Like they spent too long on too little story and didn't explore anything fully enough.
  17. Halloween II (1981) | ★★☆☆☆ | I was hoping this one would be better, but it certainly wasn't lol It felt like 20 minutes of plot stretched into an hour and a half. There were actually a few interesting plot elements in this one, but they were so random and not fleshed out that I didn't even care.
  18. Alien (1979)| ★★☆☆☆ | Talk about disappointing, man. I'd heard it was really good, but honestly I felt like the plot was shaky at best and there was really not enough about the alien. It just didn't feel like the movie pulled together, plus so much bad prop and camera work.
  19. Hocus Pocus (1993) | ★★★☆☆ | I didn't watch this as a kid, so I didn't have any like emotional attachment to it. Which I think would have helped me enjoy it more. I'd heard so much about how great the witches were, and I just didn't like them much. Overall kinda meh.
  20. The Addams Family (1991) | ★★★★☆ | I love this movie so much! I mean, the Addams are kind of my jam in a lot of ways anyway, but this is a really fun and funny movie. I love the family dynamics, and especially getting to see some of the extended family.
  21. Anaconda (1997) | ★★★☆☆ | This is one of those ones that is so bad it almost comes back around to being good lol But only almost for me bc the characters weren't quite compelling enough for me to be very invested in, and the anaconda animation was mostly just painfully bad.
  22. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004) | ★★★☆☆ | Much better than the last one tbh lol I enjoyed the characters a lot more and the graphics were infinitely better. The plot was a little B-movie, but hey, not the worst.
  23. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) | ★★★★☆ | This movie was basically the fevered wet dream of a 14 year old boy, but somehow overall enjoyable? Elvira was amusing as a character, and the little town was ridiculous and hilarious.
  24. The Rift (2016) | ★★☆☆☆ | I really have no idea what was going on in this movie tbh... I was just confused the whole time bc everything was just so weird and didn't seem like it fit into a coherent story. Also the acting/dialogue was so over dramatic and the dialogue/music balance was really off.
  25. Mostly Ghostly: One Night in Doom House (2016) | ★★★☆☆ | Lbr, this is a most definitely kids movie and it's terribly made, but it is pretty amusing. I enjoyed the two ghost kids, though I could have done without the love triangle.
  26. Mostly Ghostly (2008) | ★★★☆☆ | Which apparently takes place before the other one and has a completely different cast? Idk lol It was not terrible, but also the kids were uh, not great actors and the CGI was, well, very 2008.
  27. Blade (1998) | ★★★★☆ | I watched this I think in college, but it was fun rewatching bc there was a lot I didn't remember. Blade is awesome, though I think tbh I'm in love with Karen lol Anyway, a bit dated of course, but still a fantastic movie.
  28. Queen of the Damned (2002) | ★★★★☆ | I feel like this may be blasphemous to actual Anne Rice fans, but I liked this movie a lot more than Interview. Lestat I liked a little bit less in this, but everything and everyone else I liked more. Yeah, it was cheesy, but it was fun!
  29. Dreamcatcher (2003) | ★★★☆☆ | This movie was weird as fuck, but overall I enjoyed it. The guys were fun and I really enjoyed their friendship and how that affected everything else. Of course my favorite of the guys died first but that seems to be the way it is with me and Stephen King lol
  30. Blade II (2002) | ★★★★☆ | Apparently I remembered almost none of this! I thought it had a really interesting plot, which I enjoyed a lot, but I spent a lot of time wondering where Karen was bc this plot was perfect for her. But a very enjoyable movie anyway. I'm always down for vampire predators.
  31. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) | ★★★☆☆ | I tried to read the book once and gave up like 2 pages in bc it was too boring. The movie was... somewhat better than that. I was mostly watching it bc it's a classic and I felt like I should lol But it was nice to so many actors I like too so.
