Just got a letter from the third member of my thesis committee - his letter of recommendation to the new program to which I am applying was submitted this morning. This means two of the three are in - my advisor is the only holdout, again, but promises to have it in by the end of the week ( Read more... )

IIRC admissions folks place much more weight on a letter they know the student has not seen than on one the student has seen. Faculty tend to write with this in mind, if they know they're the ones sealing the envelope and mailing the letter. It probably doesn't make a huge difference by now since they've already submitted them to the school, but it seems like a significant breach of the protocol to me.

Unless it's different--either your personal relationships with those writing letters on your behalf, or if things are different at VT than they were at NCSU, or different for a Ph.D. program than they were for an M.S., or the like.
