Being a decent, courteous person is a serious handicap to my personal life, as well as my professional academic life; I've never been narcissistic enough to be competitive, stabbing other people in the back or treating them like dirt to get what I want. That's how you have to be, competition isn't fair, you do whatever it takes.

Then again, being uncompetitive has advantages in other areas. When it comes to janitors and technicians and secretaries, I have a bit of a rapport, being a nice guy. I manage to get everything I want, faster and better with a smile and a wink, and nobody ever asks if I have permission for anything. In my position, though, I'm far more interested in finding things out than being showered with accolades, so I can afford to be nice, and quietly do my research.
