Eventful Day

Dec 14, 2009 23:02

As I was finishing up a term paper and doing some studying, I realized I hadn't checked up on MLB news in a while (that being longer than 24 hours), since Red Sox news has been so... nonexistent lately. I looked on ESPN and a few other sites and my brain exploded ( Read more... )

Well, obviously age is not everything that factored into these decisions. Bay would have cost twice as much per year as Cameron, and it's been made pretty clear in the media that the Red Sox were concerned about Bay's health and durability in the long-term. And it's the amount of commitment, period, too. It doesn't matter how old a player is, five years is a long commitment and a lot can happen in that time. Two years is a lot less overwhelming!

If you wanna say WTF that they gave Lackey five years that they wouldn't give to Bay, I'll be with you on that one, because WTF five years for a pitcher who hasn't proven consistent durability the last couple years. I don't like it one bit.

At first I wasn't too happy with the Lackey signing until I realized his numbers will be much better now that he doesn't have to pitch against the Red Sox.

The emphasis this offseason is definitely focused on run-prevention, mostly on the defense side of that ( ... )

Yeah Ellsbury is a bit of a Jeterian CF, well, really more Edmonian I should say, compensating for poor jumps with dives and speed that look good but don't quiiite get it done all the time. Also Ells is the 3rd consecutive Red Sox CF with no arm. I'd have some concerns about how age has affected Cameron's speed, but if it hasn't much, Ells's ability and arm would probably be great in LF.

Me too.

Man, hot stove news seems so mundane and boring when it comes out during the middle of football season. I just can't get myself up enough to care right now. I'll try again in March.

A good analysis of the moves. Bay was offered 4 yrs $60 million during the season and turned it down. They speculate he wants that 5th year, and perhaps to play closer to his home in western Canada.
