The Best Signing Since David Ortiz

Sep 09, 2008 17:30

Don Orsillo has signed a four year extension with NESN as their play by play man for Red Sox games.

This puts him on contract straight through to the Fenway centennial season.

0bsessions is pleased, 0bsessions loves tagging things, announcers, the glue that holds the team together

There aren't a whole lot of announcers I like, even among the teams I follow regularly. But Orsillo is one of the best in the game.

Indeed. And IMHO he and Remy are the best combo in all of sports.

Remy would be alright as Orsillo's sidekick telling jokes on the side. But he's really not a good announcer and he always takes over the booth.

And he definitely is a distraction for Orsillo; once Remy gets off on a tangent, foget about it. He'll start talking about something moronic, something completely unrelated to the game being played or any baseball game, in the fifth, and sure enough they're still yammering on about it two innings later, whether something interesting has happened or not.

I don't think Orisillo is particuarly special, but there's much, much worse out there. What he does do well is not say anythign stupid or harsh, which a lot of announcers can't seem to help themsleves from doing.

I teach with his nephew or cousin or some relation.

I used to have a somewhat low opinion of him, mostly stemming from being in proximity to Remy's consistent doom and gloom, woe is us attitude pre-2004 when anything bad happened. As they both chilled out after the 04 series, they kind of just faded into the backgound. After all, the more idiocies I can ignore coming out of Remy the better; and, hell, once they stopped being the stereotypical whiny woe-is-us member of RSN, they started to be kind of funny and goofy. Completely vanilla. Orsillo was good at times, but he'd get carried away with Remy and be lost; I never really paid close attention: I had been so long without decent announcing of any sort that having something I could simply ignore and just watch the game was more than enough ( ... )
