TBH, I think having the fans vote period is ridiculous. Most people don't have a clue about who's the best player in any position, so they vote for names they recognize (ARod, Jeter, Papi, Manny) or their team-of-choice.

Much like the Hall of Fame. It should either be based on statistics or just be referred to as People We Like Who Happened to Play Well.

I agree with every molecule of your comment.

They should have a test or something to determine whether or not a layperson should be allowed to vote for the ASG. With questions like:

1. Name every team in MLB without going online first.
1a. Now put them into their leagues and divisions.

2. Do you manage a fantasy team?
2a. Do you actually manage it or do you just walk away after the draft?

3. Explain, in one or two complete sentences, what "Baseball Prospectus" is.

4. Can you actually read a detailed postgame box score without getting confused?

5. How many points is a "grand slam" worth?

Is 5 a trick question?

'Tek wasn't voted on by the fans, IIRC. Players' ballot.

Yeah, and players are more likely to overlook current performance when they're talking about another player's competence. It's a ridiculous inclusion, but it's a different flavor of ridiculous than the "I've heard of that guy, I bet he's awesome!" phenomenon that sends a lot of players to the game.

That makes it even more ridiculous... unless the players have some kind of major beef with Pierzynski.

Which they most likely do. Pierzynski is reputedly a big jerk.

The only people that are in it that actually deserve to be All-stars and won't be shitty afterwards are Pedey and Paps.

I'd argue that Drew deserves to be a backup outfielder.

And, I'm sorry, but there is NO WAY that Pedroia deserves the starting job over Kinsler. Absolutely not.

One could make the argument that Pedroia is the hotter hitter at the moment.

Hey, I picked up Pedroia in my fantasy league because his average has been astronomical for the last month, so I'm with you there. But Kinsler has him beat in every category outside of batting average. I mean, Kinsler's OBP over the last three weeks is over .500, and that's just insane.

Good point about it not mattering... much. Home field advantage is nice.

Chad is borderline. There are a lot of good pitchers in the NL this year.

Totally agree, except that we can't blame Tek's inclusion on the Soxtards... backups were elected by the players.
