Chris Snow thinks he knows what the Opening Day 2006 roster will look like (and it's pretty much what we had all expected/what had come clear recently ( Read more... )

I could've sworn that Choi had options left, but I have been hearing lately that he doesn't. I'd really hate to lose that guy.

But that looks pretty much right to me. When Wells comes off the DL then Dinardo takes the bus to Pawtucket. And on April 19th I'd probably send down Stern to bring up someone like Machado, Harris, or Wilson. Stern probably won't get all that many AB's as a 5th outfielder and another infielder could always help the team. Or maybe even bring Choi back up. He could at least get in some AB's as a pinch hitter.

No, Choi definitely has an option left.

I'm noticing a distinct lack of Hee Sop Choi.

Where's there room? We'd have to cut Snow, and (unfortunately) I don't think we're going to do that.

It was pretty widely understood that he'd start the season in the minors even before he got hurt.

The only other thing I can think of is what happens if Mike Lowell all of a sudden not only declines in offense, but also defense? Though I doubt that would happen the what if's are being asked day to day. Youkilis would probably have to move to third once again and Choi and Snow would platoon?

I keep hearing how Lowell has lost bat speed, but I ignore that comment based on the fact that it's Spring Traning which most players are trying to find their groove. However it's 3 days before April where most hitters get their groove in the middle of March so Choi at the moment looks like AAA/trade bait material.

This was discussed on SOSH, specifically how Chris Snow misunderstands the options rules. He said that because Choi has more than 3 years of ML service time he's done with his 3 option years and will need to clear waivers to get sent down. What he doesn't realize is that you only use an option year if you're actually optioned, you don't just automatically use them up after your first 3 years. Choi may have spent a lot of time on the bench, but it was a major league bench, and he still has options. Heck, I think David Wells has an option year left.

The only other possible impediment is players with over 5 years of ML experience can refuse an option (like Giambi did last year), and Choi doesn't quite qualify for that.

His confusion is somewhat more understandable when you consider that the Dodgers waived him quite inexplicably. But your explanation makes more sense. Somehow last night when I posted this I got it in my head that even with an option year remaining, we'd have to pass him through waivers because we had just picked him up, or something. But that's dumb.
