Oh this was so cool! I love that you had Sulu as the guidance counselor and Chekov as the physics teacher, it was a nice change in the dynamics of the usual HS au.
This is cute. I love Sulu as the guidance counselor, and Scotty only wanting to go to Starfleet University, and Sulu hitting his head on the desk. XD Also, Jim squishing sand with his monster truck made me smile.
Just one thing: saxophones are not actually part of the orchestra. There are specific pieces written with saxophone parts (Ravel's Bolero, Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite, Bernstein's West Side Story Suite, Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites 1 and 2, Vaughan Williams's Symphony No.6 and Symphony No.9, William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, and a few others), but they are not regular members. Saxophonists are called in specially if an ensemble is performing one of the pieces I mentioned.
I had no idea about the saxophones... I was basing my knowledge of saxophones on my school band experience. I had to make it an orchestra because of the strings. Now I'm going to end up on wikipedia reading up on the history of saxophones.
Understandable--the saxes are a staple in wind band repertoire. I've actually heard a lot of the orchestral pieces that have a saxophone part, since I go to music school and there was one really fantastic sax player (well, they're all great, but he stood out), so the orchestra director programmed something for him on about five different concerts. Interestingly enough, the saxophone professor at my school does not allow his students to be performance majors, because they will never have a steady job that way. Most performance majors end up playing in a professional orchestra (the Chicago Symphony, the New York Phil, etc), but that's not an option for a saxophonist.
This is just a thought, ignore it if you like, and I have no idea if it's at all helpful, but Uhura could be a doubler. Saxophone could be her primary, but she's great at the clarinet (or something else, but there's a lot of overlap between those two), so she plays that in orchestra. Just an idea I had.
I love that idea- clarinet was my instrument for five years. We played a lot of jazz as a band, though, and the saxes got a lot of the really interesting bits. Now I'll have to try to work that in.
The first scene, of Jim and Bones meeting and instantly bonding, made me ridiculously happy. They're so Jim and Bones, already, even all little like this, and their epic friendship is just too cute for words.
I can't wait for more. These vignettes are addictive.
