Confusion and Monogamy viz. Birds

There seems to be some confusion about monogamy in the world of birds. I have heard people say that "90% of birds are monogamous" (or some variation thereof). saw a nature on birds on instant netflix all about their weird mating habits. One type of bird is monogamous in that two birds will stay together and raise chicks together for the rest of their lives, but actually both the female and male bird will almost never produce offspring together, instead both are horrible sluts when away from their partners. I'll see if I can figure out which bird for you
