Shame

Shame is an underrated emotion. Human frailty is inevitable, but shame can quiet certain offenses, isolate them, and allow them to shrivel up and die. Something very much like this happened to racism--sometime in the second half of this century, racial animus toward African-Americans became shameful. I of course agree, and am glad (although, I stress, not surprised) to see you write this.

I think it is inevitable that avowed homophobia will acquire the same automatic shame as racism in America. I do wonder how long that will take. I'm confident it will happen within our lifetimes, but it may still be another couple decades...
