Due to an engaging conversation at work, I must put out the following question to the flist:

In your opinion, what are the three most overrated movies ever?

(Remember, it's just an opinion, so if one of you says The Empire Strikes Back you don't have to fear that I will come through the internets tubes to your home and strangle you in your sleep

Well, definitely The English Patient. Ghost. Maybe Titanic.

Yes to English Patient (made me impatient, I never finished it) and Titanic. Ghost, was it ever that well regarded? My problem is there are movies that are probably great cinematic achievements, but I hate the characters and the story. Like, Dr. Zhivago.

Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for her performance in Ghost . . .

This movie is either #3 on my list, or just off. I'm waffling between two.

Well yeah, but that doesn't Oscar thought the movie was good. Or my memory is just that bad. Or I didn't pay enough attention. I think there are a lot more overrated movies than Ghost. Like Gladiator.

I don't think I have a top three or anything, but I think Pearl Harbor is a terrible movie and I think it gets more and more terrible for me everytime someone says it's the best. movie. ever. Which totally makes it overrated for me. The war stuff is great, they should have left out the ridiculous love triangle. Oh, wait, speaking of love octagon, that's my third one, Legends of the Fall = hate. One of my least favorite movies of all time and such a ridiculous cult following. And my second is the Indiana Jones movies. I will at least say that I might have appreciated them more if I had seen them in the 80s and not tried to watch them 15 years later when drunk as a 22 year old at 4am, but still I do not think they are as great as everyone says they are and I think Harrison Ford will always seem unbelievably corny to me. Sorry. :P There may be others that top these, but this is what I can come up with on the fly. And I know Pearl Harbor would be in there regardless. Awful stuff, that is ( ... )

I don't know anyone that liked Pearl Harbor. It was so bad even Kate Beckinsale couldn't save it.

And by the way (and you knew this was coming), Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the 25 greatest movies ever made. :P

Ghostbusters and ET are the first two movies that came to mind for me. Especially ET. I saw it in the theatre as a kid and it freaked me out. I watched it again a few years ago and I was bored out of my skull. For the life of me I can't figure out why it's supposed to be a classic.

I think ET's popularity is more about the timing than anything else. It was the right movie that came out at the right time. In that regard I think it earned its ridiculous popularity back then, but as time has gone on . . .

Don't kill me, but I don't get what's so great about It's a Wonderful Life. Possibly because I get so bored I always change the channel to cartoons or go eat cookies or shake the presents.

No, I'm sorry, but I will most certainly have to kill you. I see no way around it. *Crosses Kit off flist.*
