The Other, Other Sherlock.

I have things to do. Important things. Things like reading a graphic novel, watching The West Wing, or even playing video games, but this is brutal.

Lucy Liu is playing Watson in CBS' Sherlock seriesIGN isn't the best source for news (actually, I love their podcasts and video game reviews but the commenters are pure shit on that site) but it's ( Read more... )

Now I love a good gener!swap, and I've (thank goodness) stopped myself from doing the whole Daisy Steiner "Girl Power thumbs up" once or twice. But my hackles are already up and like you my argument has no merit. That was pretty much why I couldn't post my rant. A good rant is being angry about anything you want it to be but I knew that I couldn't keep my feminist/LGBT card-carrying member status if I posted a rant on that. I do love a good genderswap too, in particular women in positions that are equal/rivals the male lead, but with Watson....Something about it feels wrong and that, right there, is part of the reason it does. Circular logic, no ( ... )

1. That show sounds almost as bad as the syfy "original" series of Being Human. MEH!
2. Work sucks sometimes doesn't it. Damn bills that have to be paid.
3. I've seen the ads for mass effect on tv. I must say that it looks AWESOME. I'd also like to say that it may make a good movie (it scares me that i think that about a video game)

1. I'm really starting to hate vampires about as much as I hate zombies. All of this attention being paid to these outrageous undead...things. I don't get it.

2. Ugh, BILLS! Damnit. Forgot about those. *facepalm*

3. If they make Mass Effect into a movie it's going to have Mr. White Man playing lead instead of awesome FemShep (as we players call her), which is a big deal when the game allows you so many options, one of which being your gender. Not to mention you can romance about a half-dozen different people in the game....I'd hate to see a movie. You can watch me play the new game when it comes out though! ;)

TBH Lucy Liu as Watson is the only thing about Elementary (aside from "LOL") that sounds interesting at all, and I think it's a decent idea ( ... )

I definitely agree that a Lady!Holmes would be much better than a lady!Watson, or having them both women (which might be too ~amazing~ for current TV producers), but I think your comment really defined why I'm uneasy about this cast selection. If Watson is usually portrayed as Sherlock's moral, and sometimes emotional, center, the potential for having an overly emotional Watson is high because, yo, she's a girl! *eyeroll* They tried to do it with House except Wilson just came off as a pet-dog with little character of his own (at least in the last few seasons; I'm glad it's dying). Not to forget that Watson is normally shown as inferior to Holmes in many ways, mostly because Watson doesn't have the brain power to deduce everything Holmes does. Talk about an power-dynamic I hate seeing in TV shows (and real life but that's a separate matter ( ... )

I mean, I don't really mind the dynamic where the woman is the moral compass. That's basically Doctor Who in a nutshell. The 'yay higher female presence!' for me outweighs the 'oh but she's playing the compassionate one of course'. I WOULD mind if she's constantly his inferior, but if they're competent (not saying they absolutely are, but if they were) they can easily spin it, as other shows including Sherlock have done, to show that while she lacks Holmes' genius she is much better equipped than him to deal with other things. Like... real people ( ... )

There IS the issue of whether or not Holmes/Watson will become a for-real textual romantic ship, because wheeeeeee heteronormativity.

I was thinking this as well. I would be shocked - SHOCKED! - if the show didn't do a Holmes/Watson storyline.

Sorry your day wasn't too great. :(

I actually don't have a problem with them mixing up Sherlock- it's so far in the public domain for me and I don't really feel like there's a "definitive" version, so new adaptations seem like, for example, all those different adaptations of Snow White that are coming out this year, or all the different adaptations of Jane Austen. I actually really enjoy out-there adaptations- I view them like I would a song remix or a cover song.

I think my enjoyment would hinge, however, on how they decide to take the Watson/Sherlock relationship. I would absolutely adore asexual Sherlock and Watson bff brotp, because m/f sexual-tension-less close friendship is my kryptonite, but if they go the UST and romance route I will want to gag.

Honestly though, knowing the two actors, I would prefer Liu as Sherlock and Miller as Watson.

My day was awful and I didn't get it until half-way through. Now my sleep is starting to be affected by work. Where it did get troublesome was when I was laying in bed, worrying about work. ARGH.

I've actually heard that Sherlock Holmes and comp. are in a bit of a legal battle over the whole public domain thing, but I could be thinking of another classic where ancestors just want money.

Exactly. I can't stand another "will they/won't they" heteronormative relationship on TV that I get EVERYWHERE ELSE. But if Liu were to be Holmes instead, I think I'd be a lot happier, even if I don't like her.

I'm still utterly bemused over the whole female Watson thing. Add to that the fact they plan to set it in the US too, and well, I'm sure Doyle is spinning in his grave, never mind turning
