Beware the Ides of March

OMG, I just realized that it's the Ides of March and, 2,055 years ago, Gaius Julius Caesar was stabbed twenty-three times in the Theatre of Pompey by a group of conspirators. I can't believe I forgot all about it until my boss reminded me! *facepalm ( Read more... )

Well at least it isn't on a friday then we would really have to beware. Honestly I didn't know either but I am not as much as of Roman enthusiast as you.

Meh, the ides are the 15th of every month so it doesn't have the some connotations as Friday the 13th. And it has more to do with a prophecy told in an historian's account of the events about a soothsayer telling Caesar to beware the Ides of March, which he dismissed. The whole story is fascinating, really. I'm sure I'll gush about it later. :D

You had classical studies?! *is envious* I had the usual stuff you get as a little kid: Julius Caesar invades Britain...blah blah blah...and not much after that. The reminders are everywhere though; and King Caractacus had his big barney [barney rubble = trouble; so fight or argument] with the Romans just down the road from here. And I visited Colchester Castle to find out about Queen Boudica/Boadicea (however you want to spell she's still a heroine of mine).

Anyway; basically I'm saying I wish I knew more, but I've been busy learning other stuff. I still know far too much about constructing a trebuchet than is necessary though...

I was a Classical History and Psychology major at college. Didn't you know that? :)

Yeah, so I know my fair share of it. My real strength is in the fall of the Roman Republic (aka Caesar's era), from about 100 BCE to around 40BCE. And, don't worry if you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure I'll give a history post later on, just because I'm like that and Caesar is, strangely, a personal hero of mine. He was just a pure genius.

Ooo, trebuchets...I want one!

No, I didn't know that. :)

I went mad on Claudius for a while and read up about his era, and knew the lineage from Julius Caesar to Nero; but that was an awfully long time ago. I've watched numerous documentaries on Discovery [and the BBC bonkfest], like you do, and visited some Roman sites here; so I'll look forward to your post.

I love Roman uniforms, especially the one worn by Joaquin Phoenix, and Rory's one. What? Can't a woman look now? ;D
