So I’m in-game, bumming around Aldor Rise, when I saw a new and strange-looking NPC named Caylee Dak. And by strange, I mean that it looked like a player-controlled character at first glance-a level 70 night elf hunter with mismatched armor, a Sonic Spear, and a nightsaber pet named Dusky. And I had to wonder-what was she doing there

The X-Files did something similar for Leyla Harrison, a fanfic writer who died of cancer. It was a very interesting sort of dynamic because Leyla and Scully happened to be fighting cancer at about the same time. It's not unheard of, but I think it's still pretty rare.
