I want to begin by saying that I believe that anytime there is conflict between a teacher and a student, the teacher is as much to blame as the student.
Oh honey, you and I both know you have done nothing differently, and you have not failed her. Education is a two-way street. Students must do their fair share of the work if they want an education, while teachers do their share to provide it. You have been more than accommodating. Yes, we often feel that what we are doing is not really preparing kids for the real world, but part of their education is not just doing math or giving speeches. A large part of education is learning responsibility, adjusting to rote, being able to work independently, adapting to different teaching styles (as one, in the real world, will have to adapt to different bosses). She is not doing her share of the work. M is looking for the quick solution to her lifelong problems, and like many her age, thinks only of the immediate rather than the distant future
( ... )
You are such a passionate teacher anyone would be lucky to have! I always enjoyed the classes when the teachers truly cared (and by reading your posts I can tell that you do). But, some students are unreachable. I don't think you actually did anything to M. It's easier for her to blame others for her lack of effort.

M did not graduate with her class, which makes me sad. I hope she's able to get her GED and move on to a good job or college soon.
