I hate this time of year...

A long time ago I read in a review of Dead Poets Society about how a teacher's life is a cycle of renewal and loss. Since then, I've  looked at my life in that way; new chances in the Fall, and loss and moving on in the Spring with graduation and the end of the school year ( Read more... )

I can't say I feel the same way about kids this year. There was a year when I felt really sad to see my kids leaving and going on to the high school. Very few keep in touch, and I seldom get to find out how they're doing at the high school and beyond. But the group we have this year has, for the most part, failed to touch me so that I'll really miss them.

Teachers are another story. Some retirees keep in touch (my friend Joan being an excellent example), while others seem to make a point of breaking off contact.

The cycles of life....

I do miss the kids, but it hasn't really been any sadder than a normal year, except this week in the afternoons.

And honestly, I thought I was glad for Diana and Cotton, until I realized I missed him. He left a sweet note on my board, and cut out before the end of the day. After I wrote the note, I thought he probably did the right thing, 'cause would have probably had to have seen me cry.

A man who worked with me as a teenager in church work passed away on Tuesday, and our minister left town for good on Sunday. I'm sure it's just everything all together, but it's been a long time since I've just sat down and cried.

Hugs are gratefully received. I do feel much better, one of my students texted me a couple of times this afteroon, and we consoled each other (she was Cotton's baseball manager this year).

It sometimes seems to me that the older I get, the more changes bother me. I'm not sure why. Maybe I've just seen to many and have reached overload. You think I'd get more used to them, but it doesn't always seem to work that way.

I hope you DO get to see some of these people from time to time.

I've wondered if it's advancing age that's making me so much more sentimental.

I hope we do get to see each other again, a staff member is getting married next week, and I hope we all show up then.

Thanks so much for the hugs...I needed them.

I work in the admin section at a Uni, so don't see as much of the kids... but there have been some academics that, when they left, I felt the loss :(
