There are 10's of thousands of Bruins fans. A very small percentage of them are guilty of the ass-hattery that you describe. That being said, even if it were only 5% of them, that is 5% too many. Painting the fan base based upon the actions of a few isn't particularly useful. Certainly, there are a number of fans that do not deserve the joy of the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup. However, there are many, many more who do.
I am sorry you had to endure what you did. People like that need a stick to the head.
As for the Vancouver fans ... appalling. Their team had a good run. They had a season EVERY (well, all but one) team in the league would die to have. And how did they show their appreciation? By destroying a small part of the city the team represents. I have never been able to understand the mentality. Alcohol and sports do not mix. Ever.
I think it's the job of the other 95% of fans to police the the rest, teach by not standing by and letting it happen or getting swept into mob mentality. 'A stick to the head' is rarely the answer. That kind of speech and attitude just adds fuel to the fire.
Speaking up and pointing it out is a start. Stopping it from escalating is the correct answer. Showing that this behavior is wrong and won't be tolerated is what is needed. Not just for hockey fans but all sports fans.

I've been looking at footage of the riots in Vancouver. I'm appalled that humans, no matter their citizenship, behave like this over a GAME.
Egypt must think we are so petty.
*sigh*

Keep the anger and rage out of fandom.
