I don't think anyone except royalty could afford to wrap presents back then -- a piece of cloth would have been a pretty substantial present on its own.

As far as the history goes, you are right, gifts were seldom wrapped -- though for a very grand gesture to a social equal, they might be wound in fabric, which was then disposed of by the receiver in an equal display of disdain for the cost.
Individual nobles often possessed greater wealth then the royal family, whose coffers were constantly depleted to finance foreign wars or to reward favorites.
I deliberately chose to have the present wrapped to show Lex's family's wealth and his own sense of extravagance. It's kind of like the medieval equivalent of giving somebody a truck for Christmas. :)
