Day 06 - Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
The thing is, Who is my family's fandom
My main family unit, small though it is, is quite varied and disparate. Me, my Mum, my Nan and my boy cousin love sport, my girl cousin and my uncle loathe it unless engines are involved. Me, my uncle and my girl cousin love sci-fi and fantasy, my Mum refuses to have anything to do with aliens, elves or orcs. Me and my girl cousin are comics/manga readers. Me, my Nan, my Mum and the girl cousin are knitters/fibre-crafters. Me, my Nan and my Mum love us some crime fiction. My Nan and my boy cousin love soap and sentimental dramas, me and my Mum go to the kitchen to make mocking, vomiting noises. My Nan and me love kung-fu flicks and westerns and films where stuff blows up. My Mum wishes we'd grow up.
And so on.
Yet the one thing we could all agree on was Doctor Who. It was the one thing that interested all of us, and didn't annoy any of us.
My Mum and my Uncle had watched it from the start and they loved the First Doctor, and were more or less willing to accept the Second Doctor, but were highly dubious about the rest. My uncle still says my love of the Third Doctor is a sign of my perfidy but he's willing to accept the Fourth Doctor (who do you think I have inherited my old Dr Who novelisations and annuals from). My cousins are both Seventh Doctor fans and we all used to be thoroughly terrified when the BBC showed re-runs when we were little.
Then the new series happened and my Mother adored Nine (of whom more at a later date).
Then Ten happened, and all the things that annoyed me about him annoyed her more and she didn't have a love of the Ood to fall back on. So she stopped watching.
My boy cousin, on the other hand, loved 10 and now refuses to let me watch the Christmas specials in peace because he doesn't like 11. (FYI, the boy cousin is a year older than me and is a full grown adult)
So yes, it would be nice if we all liked, or at least tolerated, 12.
