Modpost: Tagging standards

Apr 11, 2010 20:36

One of the other things I'm trying to do is make the tags consistent. We've never had rules about tagging, so some people do and some people don't and some people tag one way and some people tag another and the oldest posts aren't tagged because they were made prior to the existence of tags. So from now on, here's what'd be good for people to do ( Read more... )

community rules, tag request, mod post

sorry for the repeated editing, I keep noticing mistakes in my wording >.< debris_k April 11 2010, 11:07:03 UTC
As a long-time tagger in an unrelated comm (and general busybody in a few others) might I suggest you turn off members' ability to create new tags? That way only existing (and used - only mods can see unused tags) tags would be available for folks to add and it would cut down drastically on tags appearing twice over in different forms and spellings, etc, etc. Learned this the hard way I did, back when I first set out to tag a comm. Has been working like a charm since, though.

A simple 'misc.' or 'new tag [of this and that type] needed!' would be the only thing you'd need to add to preserve the system of folks being able to get new tags when needed. Mods could check up on them from time to time and do what needs to be done, and everyone would be perfectly content. :-)

I really, really like this idea. And possibly should've thought of it myself considering it's how tagging works at capeandcowl, where I play, so I'm aware of the functionality.

Thanks heaps for bringing it to my attention. I'm going to do this.

Glad to be of help! :-) I'd offer help with the tagging itself, but on edgy dial-up it's both costly and nerve-wrecking to spend any prolonged time online.

Oh, that's absolutely fair enough, and it's a massive help just to have that suggestion; I don't expect anyone to offer to help tag! (Although I suppose if anyone wants to, they can always put their hand up; there are an awful lot of entries now I'm looking at them...)

Do you maybe want us to go back and find our fics that are untagged and put suggested tag info at the top? (Yeah, I know, easier said than done for some of us - I only have three so far, not tens like some people.)

That'd be great! And yes, it could be worse, you could be tsukinobun, who joined last year and has approximately eighty billion fics up from what I can see going through the archives.

pff, at least she updated regularly.

I'd edit hers myself or offer so or whatever, but hopefully by now you already have done, realizing that they're mainly all together time-wise.

Hi, I had started a mass tagging mission for this comm, I did ask, you seemed ok with it.
It was a couple of years ago and life did get in the way, but if you'd like me to help again, Or just chat about what I've already done, then I'm available.

Phe, you're awesome. If you're cool to keep tagging and let me know if you run across authors who need a tag, or episodes we don't have a tag for yet that get mentioned, and so on, that'd be fantastic.

NP, Can I assume, at this point, that none of the tags I've already added have been removed?

I haven't removed any tags so far except for a handful that were unused (not author tags, just some random stuff).

I was just going through the recent posts and adding some author tags, but I noticed there are several new authors posting that don't have tags yet. Could anything be done about this? :) I also noticed in the tags list that there is a tag called "ew icky het" or something. I'm not sure this tag is all that necessary...

Hee, the 'ew icky het' was actually my tag on one entry :D I'll change it to something less silly.

I can make new author tags, I'll go over the last few months and see who needs a tag.

Awesome! :D Heh, the tag just puzzled me, is all. I didn't think it had been used very many times. :P
