Dear certain folks in various fandoms:

The female characters on any given show aren't getting in the way of your slash ships. The writers and/or producers of any given show are getting in the way of your slash ships. These female characters (and/or their actresses) honestly don't deserve the vitriol.

sincerely,
me.

I'd go further and say that nothing and no one actually gets in the way of anyone's slash ships.

True enough. Though, if you're annoyed that your ship isn't canon, it's not really the poor female characters on the show's fault. The writers/producers decide what happens when and with whom.

Fandom exists for a reason, folks.

I think you can dislike a female character for character reasons -- there are some female characters that would rub me the wrong way if I met up with them in RL, just as there are male characters who do the same for me. (Sirius Black and Captain Jack come to mind.) But I do not get the hatred of female characters/actresses just because of the slash ships. JFC, fandom, you can slash without hating the women.

(Do not even get me started on Ginny and Astoria-bashing in H/D fandom. Sigh.)

I dislike plenty of female characters, but strangely none of them are dating any of the dudes I slash. My dislike has everything to do with them, their actions, etc.

I'm terrifically curious about why you dislike Captain Jack. And which Captain Jack. Please, if you wouldn't mind, tell me?

Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood. Ironically, I dislike him for most of the same reasons I dislike Sirius Black--I find them a little too arrogant in a way that I can't really relate to? Which given that I love Snape and Draco is ironic, I suppose, if we consider their arrogance, but there's something about Sirius and Captain Jack's particular brand of arrogance and swagger that's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I could probably track it down to my dislike of some similar guys in high school, I suspect...

It's probably because the arrogance is coupled with the presupposition you're supposed to like them because they're arbitrarily the good guys? And even if they both have these really negative traits, we're supposed to handwave it because...just because. With Snape and Draco, we're set to look for the good underneath the bad. It's makes a difference.

Although I never found Ginny a very interesting character I never understood why so many readers hate her with such a passion. I don't think even Bellatrix gets that much dislike.

I might just be a big softie though because I even like Peter Pettigrew ...:P

The Ginny hate was and is epic. I never got it. I was never over fond of her and that's mainly because she really wasn't written very deeply. But, I never got the hatred.

The misogyny in some fandoms really, really creeps me out. When it gets to the point that I can't safely engage with the broader mass of the fandom on comms without wanting to stab at least one person in the eye, it makes me wonder if it's my happy fun place any more. Kind of defeats the purpose, you know?

Me too. There's a huge difference between disliking a female character (totally legit, in my opinion) and being horrible. Because they start discussing her looks, her hair, her weight, her presumable sexual history, etc. And it's really alarming the way people will tear another down.

I want fandom to be a fun place, too.

It's just as bad in NCIS fandom. The Ziva hate is so over the top, it's ridiculous.

Thank you.

If I see an annoying female character, I blame shitty writing.

It generally is shitty writing. I just get tired of seeing the words: bitch, slut, whore, etc thrown around whenever someone doesn't like a character.
