In the last seven to eight years, I've read a whole lot of fanfic. And, consequently, developed a whole lot of preferences and pet peeves

oh, I am totally with you there. I don't know about many of your pairings but John Sheppard admitting to feelings? It's practically canon that he'd prefer to die. And Sherlock? well duh.
I don't know why some writers do that either. I would, quite frankly, run the other way if someone started waxing poetics about me, especially if it would be at the start of a relationship. CREEPY. On the other hand, in very very specific circumstances I could go with a mushy line or two, from specific characters.
I agree, and in real life, most people don't confess their love of one another to each other like that. Not since Elizabethan England, anyways. Excepting that high school , "No, you hang up." "No, you!"
I've seen people discuss it ad nauseum - not with their partners - but with their friends, a la "Oh, how much do I love him/her, let me count the ways, while you sit there and listen to me. Forever and forever."
Fanfic is 99.9% wish fulfillment; obviously fans *wish* their characters/show/canon was a certain way, and when it doesn't go that way, they write it so. It's how fandoms form.
The problem is when the writer self-inserts, whether by Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu, or using a fandom as a vehicle (the fandom characters/characterizations are irrelevant) to release their psychological issues or their unrealistic glamourized romanticism or sentimentality on unsuspecting readers.
Lex Luthor would THINK all that poetry shit and compose lengthy sonnets to how much he loves Clark and how Clark is the sparkly vampire of his soul, but he'd SAY something more like "If you ever leave me I'll destroy everything that you care about in this world!"
