Canon: Naruto
Character: Kushina Uzumaki

Timeline: From 16 years before Shippuuden, immediately before she and Minato’s deaths.

Personality: It’s certainly true that Naruto had to get his energy and gusto from someone, and that someone is Kushina. She has a clear love for life and family that isn’t going to be beat, not if she has a say.

From what we see in the manga through flashbacks and what little tidbits are given by others Kushina is a fiery, sometimes ill-tempered, impulsive, and passionate woman. She was taken from home at a young age (which will be discussed further down) and tasked with housing the nine-tailed fox demon. Most girls would probably be insecure, nervous, and hesitant in a situation like this, but Kushina possesses too much resolve to let something like that keep her down. Not only does she declare that she’ll become the first female Hokage, but when her irritated classmates began to bully her for it, calling her names and teasing she beat the crap out of them rather than waiting to be helped or taking the issue to a teacher. She’s fearless (until you start talking about labor pains), her personality and mindset are anything but meek, and she certainly prefers to handle her problems head on if she can; she’s not without understanding that battle often time consists equally of power and intelligence, however.

After being rescued by Minato the brash tomboy began to slowly change (Some might say it was for the better, but really, who’s to judge her?), her temper simmering down to a more manageable point, enough to quell the urges to use her fist to resolve every problem, at least. Her perceived fearlessness isn’t literal. Naturally even the former jinchuuriki has things that she fears but what Kushina possesses is the strength of heart, mind, and character to face those situations with a cool head like any good shinobi should do. This was one of the details about her personality that remained intact at the fore front of her being. As to what actually changes: It’s not so much that she became a new person, but instead it’s more that being with Minato gave her a feeling of peace and belonging. Every now and again her old temperament still flares up and she can become violent pretty much on reflex, but she’s also demonstrated an awareness of it, along with an effort to stop these slip-up’s, as illustrated by her immediately becoming sheepish after hitting Naruto on the head in a fit. She and Minato argue from time to time and it’s stated that he’s only ever won one of them (their final argument no less). Her favorite feature about herself is her hair, referring to it as her own personal “akai ito”, red string of fate, meaning that she believes in such things even if it was only after being rescued by him.

Kushina is all around very accepting of most others and usually she’s pretty laid back and at ease in familiar company, such as with the villagers. She doesn’t have to know you to be kind to you; the same goes for wanting to help you. Just be careful not to push her too far. It may be that it’s a bit difficult to get on her really bad side but you’d regret it the moment you were there. Kushina is prone to raising her voice to outdoor volumes and using the word “like” and the nonsense word “dattebane” when she gets flustered, excited, or worked up. That temper is so infamous that it actually called for an immediate change of her classmates’ teasing nickname for her. The sight of her wild red hair lashing about through the air as she beat them into submission was enough to make them start calling her “the bloody habanero” instead of simply “tomato”. You almost have to feel sorry for them.

By the time that we meet her in the manga it seems that she’s become much more mellow (or that could just be the fact that she’s been part of Naruto’s sub consciousness for so long) , and we get to see that she’s matured and has a very gentle motherly side to her as well. She remains more emotional and impulsive, still, at the point that I’m pulling her from. The glimpse into Kushina’s personality before death is painfully brief but it tells a lot. The prospect of parenthood clearly excited her just as much as the idea of child birth seemed to be the one thing that frightened her. It’s way too easy to picture her dragging Minato from store to store getting ready for Naruto’s arrival, reading through parenting and pregnancy books and being just naïve enough to be treated to constant surprises in their pages. Naruto’s love for ramen probably comes from Kushina as well, she likely went ahead and tried sneaking in a few bowls from Ichiraku’s over the course of the ten months carrying him (Just like, one bowl can’t hurt!).

Once she begins to get past the immediate memories of her canon-point then her easier going and playful personality is bound to shine through again.

Background: Kushina is originally born of the Uzumaki clan, of the Eddy village in the Land of Whirlpools. Because their clan was so well known and respected for the strength of their sealing techniques, coupled with Kushina having been born with the ideal chakra for the task, and also added to that was the fact that the Leaf and Eddy villages had distant blood ties it was decided that Kushina would move to Konohagakure to become the fox’s new vessel when Lady Mito died. Everything was kept a secret from her until Kushina arrived. When the truth was revealed the girl had no words. It’s a great deal to ask someone that young to take on, but sound advice put her on the right path; the most important thing for a potential jinchuuriki to possess was love. She was enrolled in the academy not only to become a kunoichi, but also in the hopes that she would make rich, hopefully lifelong bonds to help ease the burden of becoming a tailed beast’s host. At some point after coming to Konoha her village was destroyed, leaving Kushina (presumably) an orphan.

It was on the very first day in the academy that Kushina met her future husband, Minato. At the time it’s a well known fact that she thought he was nothing more than a flaky pretty boy, or rather-girly boy was the exact wording. He was in truth just one of the faces that she judged by appearance, and it certainly didn’t help her case.

When the teacher asked the students what their dreams were it didn’t matter that she’d JUST moved there, or that she had yet to make a single friend. She wanted to knock the class out of their seats, so she blurted out that she wanted to become the first female Hokage. Her classmates were shocked, alright, but the boys mainly angrily so. She was briefly subjected to teasing about her face and hair, earning the nickname “tomato”… for all of one day, since the consequences for incurring her wrath involved her beating the boys senseless. Her appearance during the mostly one sided fight earning her the new nickname of “The Bloody Habanero”.

An undisclosed number of years passed, and the Hidden Cloud village attempted and succeeded in abducting Kushina from the leaf village. Rather than panicking she kept a cool head, thus was allowed to walk along between her captors instead of being knocked out and carried. She managed to use that to leave a trail of strands of her hair, undetected by anyone but Minato. It’s said that he single handedly recovered her safely from the Kumogakure shinobi, and it was on that day that Kushina realized her feelings for him.

The series skips ahead at that point, not really covering Kushina’s role in the story so much as Minato’s. She married him at some point, and it’s clear they were together before he became Yondaime, but until shortly before Naruto’s birth we really don’t see any more of her. Speaking of which, let’s talk about that.

The birth of their son had to be kept secret due to the fact that a female jinchuuriki’s seal was at its weakest during childbirth. Sarutobi’s wife was one of the very few trusted with the knowledge, and actually in fact helped deliver Naruto that night. Kushina was forced to struggle through not only the strain of labor, but also the efforts of the fox to use her distraction to break free. It’s only thanks to Minato’s presence that it remained sealed as long as it did, until Madara interfered and threatened their son. Amidst the confusion Kushina was abducted before she even had a chance to hold her son. In the confrontation that followed she had the nine-tails stripped from her body by force, but through will power and strength she managed to survive the painful extraction. Minato arrived to rescue her after getting Naruto to safety, and Kushina was finally allowed her first moments with their child.

The reunion was sadly short lived, not only because of the fact she was slowly dying, but the only peaceful end to the battle had to come at the loss of both of the parents’ lives. She was angry and confused at first by Minato’s plans, but after some reasoning and a firm reminder of just whose son Naruto was she knew that he was right. Using their own bodies to shield him the two finally gave their goodbyes.

Despite becoming a Jinchuuriki Kushina was very happy with her life. She had friends throughout the village, love, and even if it was just for a short while they even got to spend some time with their son. It wasn’t how she’d choose to end it if given a choice, but she has no regrets aside from their time being cut short.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Kushina is noted to have special chakra, noteworthy enough that the Cloud village wanted to get their hands on her. Having attended the academy as a kunoichi Kushina possesses, at minimum, the same level of knowledge and training as any other shinobi. She initially is no good at ninjutsu as a child but becomes very well known for her barehanded fighting techniques, as well as-apparently -her own style of ninjutsu later on. This is never specified in canon, so I’m unable to comment specifically on what she can do. If it becomes necessary then I can run any updates by the mods as new information becomes available?

Several abilities that she is shown to have in the series are her skills with fūinjutsu, outstanding longevity, endurance thanks to her powerful life-force, and at least one attribute of her chakra. With it she is actually able to form chains that are capable of pinning even the nine-tails.

It’s also safe to assume that her taijutsu is something to be reckoned with, probably not on Tsunade’s, Sakura’s, or Rock Lee’s levels and speeds, but more likely than not they make up a bulk of her overall fighting style.

Last: Kushina, if accepted, will be arriving in very poor condition. I wasn’t sure if characters automatically heal upon arrival like in other games and didn’t see it covered in the rules or FAQ, so if this is a problem then I can pick an earlier point? I was also told that there are healers that might be able to help if it became necessary.

Sample Journal Post:(Set with the assumption that she’s already been healed and hanging around for a little while.)

[She still looks tired, but considerably better than she did when first arriving. This post is purely accidental as the red headed woman attempts to work completely unfamiliar controls. For the moment she’s been left alone, and her thoughts are hard to discern from just her expression.] The heck kind of place is this’ttebane…? They said this PCD thing would let me talk to others…

[Weirdest radio communicator EVER, is more like it. After everything she’s recently gone through Kushina just doesn’t have the patience to fight with a piece of technology, of all things. The feed shakes violently as she suddenly begins tapping away at the screen with more pressure than necessary.] Hey, thing! I want to talk to Minato, or at the very least, like, someone that can tell me how the hell I got here! Hah…

[Her shoulders and her head slump slowly. She has to stop, there. She’s really not in any condition to be fussing and getting all worked up., evidenced as the view jostles and falls away from her, just not before a pained and remorseful look can be seen.] Damn it, this sucks dattebane--! [The feed ends as the PCD hits the ground and a button is accidentally knocked.]

Sample RP: (This sample was made under the assumption that she doesn’t need healing upon arrival, simply because it’s easier to portray her personality if she didn’t have a giant hole in her body. :])

If she had arrived a day sooner, or even just a few hours before becoming such a tired mess then she would definitely have been raising hell. Hell- she felt like doing that NOW, and who could blame her for it, anyway? The first thing that she’d noticed upon “waking” was that she was alone. If that was a bad or good thing still remained to be seen, as it was some time later and she was still no more certain as to where she’d ended up than she had been one minute prior.

She reached up a hand to scrub the drying blood away from her chin using the back side to do so. There was no sign of Konoha, the woods, Naruto, Minato, or even the nine-tails. It gave Kushina an uneasy feeling as she looked over her shoulder. It literally looked like a war zone… Her legs wobbled briefly, but she stood. Her injuries were gone, and instead she simply felt exhausted, and the fox was still gone. Could this be Madara using genjutsu on her, but why? She was already dying. That would have made no sense! Kushina stubbornly pushed her mind to focus as sharply as possible, scouring the area with her eyes for any sign of home.

“Nandattebane…? Just what is this place?”

The sick twisting in her stomach persisted. There was no one around, no indication that anyone else had even been around. She was alone, wherever she was, Minato wasn’t here, and neither was their son. There were pretty much just two or three choices. Her red hair spilled backwards as she tilted her head skyward, staring skyward with a glassy gaze.

“Well, Kushina, you can stand around here crying like a baby, or you can go look for your husband and son. Which is it going to be-ttebane?”

Goosebumps suddenly appeared on her arms where she stood, a breeze blowing through gently in a general direction, her hair sweeping with it as though to point the way for her. It was as good as any sign from Minato as far as she was concerned. A determined expression appeared on her face. Just a moment afterward trembling arms lifted, her clean hand came up to scrub the tears off her skin, a deep breath drawn. There were even more buildings in worse shape up ahead where her hair had been carried briefly by the wind.

“Right: The first step was always supposed to be the hardest, or something: might as well get it out of the way now.”
