I find him squishy too. He's just so young and in love, and I'd always had the impression that he loved Renly much more than Renly loved him.

Why is this impression so prevalent? I mean, because I felt the same way reading it. Is it the age gap? The Baratheon thing?

I think it's because of the contrast of Renly's carefree personality versus Loras's more intense, passionate personality. Also I can't get over Renly's reaction, or rather his lack of reaction when Gregor nearly killed Loras at the Hand's Tourney. If their situations had been reversed, Loras would have been running out there with his sword, but Renly doesn't seem fazed at all. He just carries on bantering with Littlefinger.
